hi,
this is my first posting to the list, though i've been reading the digest
for a long time. So, first a general thanks for the good conversation and
info.
Now, can anyone direct me to a a good URL or other location for info on tire
and wheel sizing information. As soon as I finish the suspension rebuilt I
will be investing in a new set of aftermarket wheels and tires, and I want
to make sure they fit right. I've got a 1970 convertible. Is there any
standard wheel size, backspacing, tire size combo I should know about?
Thank you,
Andrew Flurry

Andrew,

15x6 4.000" 215/70/15
15x7 4.250 225/60/15
15x8 4.500 225/60/15
15x9(69-70only) 5.500 236/60/15
16x7 4.250 205/55/16-225/50/16
16x8 4.500 225/50/16-255/50/16
17x7 4.250 205/50/17
17x8 4.500 235/45/17-245/45/17
17x9 5.500 245/40/17-275/40/17
18x7 4.250 225/40/18

Yes please post some 65 - 66 tire combos. I run 205/65 HR15 front and
225/60 HR15 rear on 15x7 Mach 1 steel wheels (from a 1971 car , I guess).
They fit my 66 convertible very nicely. I wonder if the 235/60 R15 Drag
radial will fit the rear on those wheels ?
Cheers,

Andrew,
See other responses for backspacing, and other info pertinent to after
market wheels. IMHO, some of the factory wheels look best on the Mustang -
even a modified one. Magnum 500s are available repro in 14" or 15" sizes
with 6, 7, and 8" widths. I'm also in love with the 69-70 Shelby wheels
(15x7"
. A chromed set of 69 styled steel wheels (used on the GT & Mach I)
looks pretty good too (14x6"
and is reasonably priced. My favorite is
the 70 Mach I deep steel slotted rim with either trim ring & hub cap, or
the sports wheel cover that came standard. Look at some Mustang books
for pictures.
The tire I recommend is the BFGoodrich T/A Radial; 60s series P225 14s.
It fits well without scraping, has great foot print and wet traction,
and is reasonably priced. Ditto for the Goodyear Eagle STs (same size).
I used the BFGs on my 70 Mach I w/Sports Wheel Covers on 14x6" slotted
rims; but a stock appearance is important to me.
Remember your car came with 14" wheels, so using 15" wheels will re-
quire changing the speedometer gear (all other things being equal).
If you don't, your speedometer will be wrong.
