Forgive me for this simple question, but what rear end is most likely in a
'73 Q code mustang?

First, what is a '73 Q code?

Would the rear end most likely be:
-a 9" traction-lok, or equa-lok?
-4 pinion (4 spider gears) or 2?
-with the four "lightening" (weakening) holes or not?
-28 spline or 31?

I need a 3.50 traction-lok rear and I need to know.

Please email me at (email redacted) as I will be on vacation after today, and I
won't be getting the list.

Thanks! Merry Christmas!

Best Regards,

Keven,

I've got a '73 Q code with C6, and 'R' code 9"-3.25 trac-loc(28 spline).
But I think the gear ratio can vary just like any other year.
The best thing to do is locate the carrier tag if it still exists
or break down the axle code.

The Q code is just the engine designation.
'Q' = 351 4V (CJ)or Cobra Jet rated at 266HP

I'm not positive, but I would think the 9" trac-loc would have
been standard with the 'Q' code. As for 28 or 31 spline
I couldn't tell you.

As for the 3.50 ratio, I'm right there with you. I'd like one
for my '68. 8" or 9". I think I'm going to cannibalize the '73
and settle for the 3.25's since body wise it's a basket case.

Hope my limited knowledge helps.

Regards,
Rick Armstrong

I can tell you first hand that a friend's 73 Q code coupe came with a
3.50 open rear end. We couldnt believe it either. The sticker on the
door indicated 3.50 open, the tag on the 3rd member said 3.50 open, and
when we spun up the axle, it was an open. The only thing we can figure
is his dad, the original owner, bought the car stock and added on all
the extras piece by piece. The thing had the Q motor and a 4 speed too,
but no trac-lok...it even has staggered shock too !! weird, eh?

Ford was pretty cheap when it came to posi . . . excuse me, traction
lock rear-ends. My wife's '68-1/2 428CJ Cougar came from the factory
with a 3:50 open rear end. Replacing that right rear tire every 5K
miles gets expensive smiling smiley

Later,
Mark
