The early mustangs had a aluminum waterpump without a metal plate on
the back. In 67 I believe they went to a cast iron pump called the HO
it appears to have a larger displacement( pump more water)it has a
stamped metal plate with 2 bolts that fits up against the timing
chain cover.
Gas gauge- I have had some experience with the gauges and sending
units. If your unit is reading incorrectly it is most likely either
the sending unit in the tank or the voltage regulator. Find another
sending unit and connect it to your car. 1 wire that clips on. it
will also have to have a good ground. move the float through the arc
and see what your gauge does. Another problem can be an open in the
sending unit. the wire broke in mine and when full it would read
empty then as the gas got to 1/4 tank read correctly again. The
voltage regulator pulses and is hard to check. I just replaced mine
just in case.

Aluminum to cast iron water pumps changed in May 1965...though aluminum
ones remained in stock as replacement parts across the counter for many
years after.
