This may sound odd, but a colleague and I tonight were discussing car
warranties. He was trying to sell the position that AMC was the first
company to offer a bumper to bumper 12 month/12,000 mile warranty on a
car in the 1970's. I said (and have confirmed) that my `66 coupe had a 24
month/24,000 mile warranty on it.

Was the Mustang an anomaly for the time with a warranty? Or is the friend
misinformed?

Just curious.

Thanks.

According to everything I can find, your friend
is - like many AMC owners - woefully misinformed. ;-)

Seriously, its a complicated subject. Here's a
quick synopsis of what I think I know:

FoMoCo was first among the majors to give what
was then called an "extended warranty" - out to
12/12 - and did so during the 1961 run. Prior
to that, I believe the coverage was only 90 days
or 4K miles. Coincidentally, that's exactly the
same brief coverage provided "high-performance"
engines once 12/12 warranties came online. This
policy of limiting coverage of HP engines stayed
throughout the 1960s.

24/24 coverage took effect with the 1963 models.
1967 added a 5/50 warranty on "major powertrain
components", excepting certain "hi-per" engines.
Update kits were issued to dealers, with stickers
designed to cover the affected pages in each type
of owners manual!

24/24 and 5/50 continued through the 1969 cars,
but 5/50 was made a $15 option for 1970 (and a
second registered owner could add same for $30).
For good or ill, both disappeared with the 71s,
which once again had only 12/12 coverage.

Is the debate about the length or the fact that it was Bumper to bumper?

Even if the Mustang had a 24 month warranty, that probably only covered
major components and not Bumper to bumper. IMO

Walt Boeninger tells us ...

Nope, it sounds like bumper to bumper to me. From the manual ...

"Ford Motor Company warrants to the owner each part of this Ford vehicle
to be free under normal use and service from defects in material and
workmanship for a period of 24 months from the date of delivery to the
original retail customer or until it has been driven for 24,000 miles,
whichever comes first.* This warranty shall be fulfilled by the dealer
(or if the owner of the vehicle is traveling or has become a resident of
a different locality, by any authorized Ford dealer) replacing or
repairing at his place of business, free of charge including related
labor, any such defective part."

The warrant also transfered to a second owner it says.

The * is for this line: "*90 days or 4,000 miles, whichever comes first,
for the 289 CID - 4 V (271 horsepower) engine and related power train
components."
