I just acquired a '66 Mustang 289 C4 auto with 2V carb. Out of the back
of the intake manifold is a large vacuum line with a reducer and tee.
One end goes to the transmission and the tee goes to a preformed steel
line (maybe 1/4" dia.) that is plugged. It is on the driver's side of
the engine. Does anyone know what this might have been connected too? I
don't see anything obvious...

Power brakes? Only think I can think of that would need vacuum in addition
to the modulator on the tranny.

I don't think this car ever had power brakes. Also, the plugged line in
question is on the passenger side, not the driver side [brain fart], if
it matters...

Gee, mine has a "PCV" valve...<grin>. But that doesn't make sense, because
the PCV goes into the carb, not the intake manifold.

PCV does go to the intake or rather the spacer between the carb and intake
on the factory setup. It needs manifold vacuum. Now, some 4bbl Holleys had
a big nipple on the baseplate where you could hook this sucker up to if you
wanted. The vent on some '65's and all '66 and later years goes from the
other valve cover to the air cleaner.

Who knows? I know what you mean about goofy owners. Whenever mine did any
work on the car, he always threw away extra parts. For example, instead of
popping the door panels back on with the clips, he threw the clips away and
put screws all around the panel! I would say about 25% of the work I did to
the car during restoration was cleaning up after that goofball. Spent a fair
amount of money with AMK buying correct fasteners for just about anything you
can imagine.
But hey, it was nearly 40 years old...guess I can't complain too much!
