Timm, I hauled a '65 Mustang from Minneapolis to Madison, WI (where I
live). Cost? $63 for the one-way U-Haul rental of the "car hauler"
(given that I had a vehicle w/hitch that could haul it). It was during
a brutal '97 storm last winter - nasty driving) I didn't think the unit
was unsafe though - just the weather. The car hauler w/surge brakes was
great. Quality was first rate, unit was pretty new. Keep it within the
specified speed limits, and I was fine. The cost of renting a "car
hauler" was the same as renting their "dolly". I recommend only the
"car hauler", as towing a car that far with a dolly is not wise (in my
opinion).
I am not sure who your "many sources" are, but you can contact me if you
are interested in hearing why I would consider them again - in a mustang
heartbeat.
I looked at 'all' the options, and found that IMHO in WI and MN (in the
winter), the best option's are:
1. U-haul car hauler one way if you have a ride and hitch (find out
who your friends are).
2. U-haul - one way "car hauler" with truck rental.
3. Ryder one-way "car hauler" and truck rental (they will not rent
the "car hauler" without renting the truck as well (safety of their
equipment) [costs most though]
Regarding Towing - I found the winter is premium rate time for them.
During this time of the year, I found they charged (on average) about
40% more than normal - and would only honor cards within their towing
zone. (i.e. about 50 mile radius). [not to say there isn't someone out
there that would do this for cheaper though].
I would like to help you, if I can, but I feel my email may be stuff you
already know.
Please email me separately at (email redacted)

p.s. Incidentally, I know NO ONE that works for U-haul, and don't care
about them one way or the other; but am one that appreciates their
one-way rental option. It is quite an amazing nationwide network that
has helped me with my mustang projects - not to mention moving.

Thanks for the all the advice and the offers for help. I didn't
mention where I live because I didn't think it mattered! I didn't expect
any offers to help, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, I live in
Minneapolis, MN (yes, some of us tundra dwellers love Mustangs, we just
don't drive them during the winter, which runs from October until
April.) and the 'stang in question is in Sheboygan, WI. (About an hour
north of Milwaukee) To the person who mentioned the Amoco Auto Club
Gold, do you have any more details? Cost, etc? That would be helpful. I
now have a few weeks to figure this out. I definitely am not giving my
money to U-Haul, they have treated me very poorly every time I speak
with them, and I have heard from many sources that their equipment is
less than satisfactory ( or safe, for that matter. ) Thanks again for
the advice. I still don't have anything figured out yet, but I do have
some options to explore. Thanks!!!

My AAA premium membership was $100 for a year and gets me a 100
mile tow for free. I don't know how many times a year I can do it. I think
it is from 4-6 times. I have never had them give me any problems. When
I was moving (about 30 miles), I used up my last tow for that year hauling
one of my junks over there. I just asked the guy who did it if he was
interested in towing the other and he made me a good deal on it too.

Yeah, tell me about this! I dolly'ed my '66 GT convertible home from a
bodyshop a few years ago and actually lost the car on a major freeway
just before rush hour traffic! Talk about freaking out! It took me
almost an hour to backtrack to where the car was, the whole time
preparing for the worst (ie, lawsuits, injuries, blood, metal, you name
it). When I got there, a cop was calling it in as an abandoned vehicle,
but the car was unscratched!!! Definitely the hand of God at work here!
Anyways, stay away from tow dollys!!!

In Colorado (as far as memory serves me and I don't have the booklet
with me..) AAA "plus" membership is:
- free towing (for member) for up to 100 miles - I believe pro-rated for
longer distances
- towed once, per vehicle, per incident/problem
- no limitations on total # of tows (as far as I know) - as long as each
incident is for a different reason (AAA told me the "reason" part).
I did ask: you can have the same car towed, for the same reason, *IF*
you have another member call it in and sign the towing papers. I've done
this once with no problem.
