To List:

We have a '66 Coupe, 289, Automatic transmission. Autolite 2100 carburator.
According to the book it should be a C-4 Transmission. (dual range, 3 speed).

I can only detect two gear speeds when driving. At what speed (on a light
throttle) should the transmission shift for each gear. When driving along
it feels like it needs to shift one more time.

Any ideas or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bev

That depends on what you call light throttle, I could idle into 3rd at 20,
or floor it and it would stay in 1st 'till 55. I have 2.79 gears and a 302
however.
Try this:
Put the shifter in 1st. Start driving, you will feel it start to rev and
need shifting, put it in second. After a bit it should need shifting again,
put it in drive.
You should feel the shift each time. The more you let it rev, the more you
will feel the shift, but don't blow the engine, it should be easy to feel
the shifts.

1-2 shift at 15-20MPH
2-3 Shift at 25-30MPH

That's a guess

Bev,

Are you starting in the green dot?

If not, you are using the 1st white dot, that means you are starting in
2nd gear, and shifting into 3rd, at approx. 29 miles per hour...that's
what Ford means by dual range...if you start in the green dot, you
should shift at approx. 19 and 29 miles per hour...

Hope this helps,

Karl

With the Cruise-o-matic, you have to move the selector back 4 slots to
get the real first gear. If you go back the standard 3 (from park), then
you get second. I read in the owners manual that it was made this way so
that you would get better traction in snow or wet conditions. Instead of
seeing a 1 and 2 for L1 and L2, you have a 1 and a green circle with
another circle around it. Shift to this gear and you will get all 3
shifts (hopefully...). But the 1st shift is at about 5-10 MPH, but it is
an awesome launch gear. Oh, and the 3 speed does really need a 4th gear,
at highway speeds it does rev kind of high even with the 2.80 rear end.
