Thoughts on a 1968 I may buy

Hi List,

I am brand new to the list and don't own a Mustang yet. A friend of mine
has offered the following car to me for $2000. I want to make it a project
car and bring it up to a decent fun show car with an interesting paint job.
I eventually want to have a 351 or 390, but based on responses my previous
post this would not be a good car for this. It would be a good first car
however to get my feet wet with Mustangs.

Let me know what you think of this deal. I trust him and know the rebuild
and other work was done right. He has moved to the mountains and the lack
of power steering in the car makes it too difficult to drive. He also needs
a 4wd.

>1968 Mustang coupe
>yellow paint
>black vinyl top (needs replacing, I have had quotes around $250)
>200 cubic inch, straight 6 cylinder engine (rebuilt in 1992)
>3 speed manual transmission
>air conditioner (not working)
>all smog equipment functional and current (not that you have to smog
>them anymore)
>
>lots of new parts replaced since 1992, including:
>
> gas tank
> entire brake system including all brake cylinders and pads
> clutch
> electrical system (voltage regulator, alternator, etc)
> tires

>I have focused my work on the drive train. The car could use new
>seat covers for the front seats (~$200 for both) and carpet (~150).

I purchased a '65 6 cylinder with rusted floor pans for $1700 4 years
ago. Shortly after than I was offered a rust free 6 cylinder '67 for
$2000 which appeared to have a cowl leak (very common). I did not buy
the '67 because I like the '65 model year better and I already owned
the '65.

It sounds like the offering price is in the relevant range. Like
others have said, if your goal is to have a v8, buy a v8 car.
