Well, I replaced the needle bearing and reset float level in my Holley. Seemed to be working great. No more leaking out of that screw I posted the picture of. Drove great to work this morning. Drove great home from work. However, got in the car to go out to Valentine's dinner, and it felt like it was idling a little rough. Got to the stoplight about a mile down the road, I started smelling gas, and it started backfiring through the carb. That started a fire in the engine compartment. I wheeled it into a parking lot, and we jumped out as the flames started shooting out from under the hood. Of course, I stupidly didn't have the fire extinguisher that I bought for shows in the car at the time. We just watched it burn. It took the fire department 15 minutes to show up, so it had pretty much burned out and was just smoldering a little by the time they got there. On the bright side, nobody was injured. On the downside, it's 3 years of work down the drain. I think the engine itself
may be
OK, but all the wiring, hoses, electronics, etc. in the engine compartment are melted and there's very little paint still left on the hood. I haven't had a chance to really sit and assess the damage in the daylight yet.
The Holley was only 6 months old, and I had the same trouble with the previous holley I had on there, so I really feel like there was something screwy with that thing that caused the fire. It's kind of depressing.
I filed a claim with State Farm as soon as I got it towed home, but I won't get to talk to the actual claims team until tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll treat me right, but I have a nagging suspicion they're just going to want to total it out.

Wow! What a total bummer. At least it didn't toast the car completely. We'll
cross the fingers for the insurance. State farm seems pretty fair. Maybe
you'll get lucky. Let us know what happens.

Fred - sorry to hear about your misfortune. Glad nobody was hurt. I have a fire extinguisher in my 68 but not the Mach. I need to get one for it as well. The fire department is usually fairly quick but not enough in this instance. Good luck with the insurance company. Keep us posted and post some pics if it is not too painful.

Just be sure to plead ignorance as far as the cause of the fire. The last thing you want is for them to think you had been monkeying around with the carb prior to the incident.

Oh, man that really is a bummer. I don't know if you can blame it on the carb, since you had back firing with two different carbs I would tend to lean toward a timing issue that materialized at the carb. Where you said it was running fine and then just went bad sounds like maybe the lock down on the disti might have been loose.
I had a similar incident a few years ago with a Nova that I was selling. Of course it was just a junker/driver, could have been more but I didn't have the drive to do anything with it, I was still working on my Mustang. Anyway I got a call and a guy was going to come by and look at it so in preparation I started it up and pulled it out of the driveway when it backfired and caught fire. My fire extinguisher wasn't enough so I borrowed the neighbor's and then another neighbor ran up the street with his (this last neighbor was a fireman in another county) which fizzled (thank god he didn't work for our county!). Meanwhile the wife had called 911, the fire trucks showed up, made sure everything was out and then we pushed the car over to a parking spot. I never saw the guy that had called, I guess he drove by and saw the fire trucks and decided he wasn't interested anymore. I ended up parting the car out and breaking even, thank god it was the nova and not the mustang!

shooting out from under the hood. Of course, I stupidly didn't have the
fire extinguisher that I bought for shows in the car at the time. We
just watched it burn. It took the fire department 15 minutes to show up,
so it had pretty much burned out and was just smoldering a little by the
time they got there. On the bright side, nobody was injured. On the
downside, it's 3 years of work down the drain. I think the engine itself
may be OK, but all the wiring, hoses, electronics, etc. in the engine
compartment are melted and there's very little paint still left on the
hood. I haven't had a chance to really sit and assess the damage in the
daylight yet.
The Holley was only 6 months old, and I had the same trouble with the
previous holley I had on there, so I really feel like there was
something screwy with that thing that caused the fire. It's kind of
depressing.
I filed a claim with State Farm as soon as I got it towed home, but I
won't get to talk to the actual claims team until tomorrow. I'm keeping
my fingers crossed that they'll treat me right, but I have a nagging
suspicion they're just going to want to total it out.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope they don't total it. It sounds like just some engine compartment damage which could pretty easily be fixed.
Perhaps a new wiring harness, a few new hoses, a bit of paint on the hood and you're back in business.
Well, Good Luck, and please keep us posted.

Subject: [CM] The Holley burned my car down
Well, I replaced the needle bearing and reset float level in my Holley. We just watched it burn. wishing you the best.
hopefully something good will end up coming out of this...maybe there's room
in your garage now for the k-code your neighbor is finally going to sell,
after being covered up in his dry garage for the last thirty years..

Wow! Sorry for for both your losses. Must be heartbreaking to watch your pride and joy go up in flames. I couldn't imagine what i would do if my baby went up in flames.
