I was looking through the reproduction 1968 owner's manual I bought
recenty, when I read that a television was a dealer installed option.

Whoa!

Anyone know how big it was and where they mounted it? Anybody ever SEEN
one of these?

Max,

The television was a 5"screen, and yes I have seen one, it was a Singer,
if I remember correctly. Pretty cool stuff, huh?

Yes I've seen the Philco model it really didn't mount anywhere more like
a little portable with a lighter attachment for power. Also available
(in ads) underdash 8 tracks, CB radios, and if I remember corrertly
record players. To my knowledge none of these items carried the Ford or
Rotunda script or name.

True -- the TV was a Philco, and the Underdash 8-Track (which is basically
the '66 AM-8T with the radio removed) was made by Motorola, as I believe
were the CB radios. Never seen a '60's Ford record player, though.

The only mounting kit for the TV allowed it to be hung on the back of the
front *bench* seat -- possibly to keep the kids occupied (and perhaps to
accomodate state/local laws prohibiting TV's mounted in the front seat,
where they tend to distract the driver...)

The Philco TV, Underdash 8T and many other items are shown on my web page,
for those who'd like to see photos...

Believe it or not, I actually remember having one of these TVs! It must have
been an option on other '68 fords because we got one with our '68 country
squire Ford wagon. That station wagon was huge! Big enough to slide a 4'x8'
sheet of plywood in the back with the rear seat folded down and close the
tailgate!!

The TV was about a 9" picture tube, and of course it was black and white. The
case was black with some aluminum trim, and I believe it was a Philco. It had
"Solid State" written in big letters on front!

It was the smallest TV I had ever seen back then, but I was pretty young. We
finally got rid of that station wagon when I was 15 (it was 16!).

It was still running well, with its 390 ci engine, but the frame was badly
rusted from the salt on the Nebraska roads, and hauling about two tons of
asphalt roof shingles in the back didn't help either! That was a long time
ago.

Well, that's enough "I remember when" stories for me today! Have a great
weekend everybody!

Best Regards,
Keven Coates
