Just a note for anyone wanting to put a T5 in your Mustang with a center
consol.
My 67 with STD 67 motor mounts spun a rod bearing after about 50K on the 289
rebuild so time for a different 289 and put the T5 in.
So after all the measurements that looked like it would go without the
spacer plate.
The T5 input shaft was bobbed the 5/8 inch and recut for the pilot bearing,
the old motor came out and it need new motor mounts, before the new rebuilt
289 went in.
Off to the parts store and after getting 3 sets of motor mounts and fighting
them for 2 days, it turns out the motor mounts for the 67 have stopped being
made and what they sold me were the mounts for a 68.
After a call to Mustangs Ect and a drive over to get the metal base plates
for a 68 to bolt in place of the bases for the 67 mounts we were back to work
with the 68 mounts lining up on the motor.
My T5 has the lower 3.36 1st and the 0.68 OD, the bellhousing was placed on
the ground trans side up on some 2x4s and the T5 was set on it.
The T5 was clocked about 3 degrees to the drivers side and new holes were
drilled for the bolts.
I had 4 small alum blocks welded inside the bellhousing where the new holes
came out and drilled these for the threaded inserts for the bolts.
The T5 had the STD shifter with the rubber mount. The shifter had some
blocks I made and placed in front and behind the shifter to keep it for bending
the forks if shifted hard.
Have to cut some of the trans hump to clear shifter box.
The T5 went in easy and cleared the center consol but when the rubber
shifter mount was tried and shifted into 1, 3 or 5 it hit the front of the drop
down box in the shifter hole.
The rubber mount was removed it still hit the bottom of the drop down box.
Tried to move center consol forward but only moved 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch,
shifter still hitting.
Ended up cutting a little of the bottom of the drop down box out and leaving
off the rubber shifter mount and made a set back bracket that bolted to the
shifter stub and shifter.
Running STD T5 shifter hole cover boot but no shifter lever boot, A thin
lever boot should still clear the front of the drop down box.
Used old toploader/std 3 speed cross member with little mod for clocked
trans and a trans mount for a 390.
original drive shaft used.
So what dose then mean:
If you use the short shaft or bob the shaft be very careful in measurements
and i did not check to see what the difference was in the old 67 motor mounts
and the new 68 motor mounts or if the was a difference in set back. but ended
up cut center consol
Suggest you go with the long shaft and adapter but clock the trans towards
the drivers side or you will hit the passenger side of the drop down box in
center consol.
The Lower 1st is great for jumping off the line but with 14 inch rims, 225
tires with a 2.73 rear end you hit 3000RPM at 26MPH, my old top loader was
3000RPM for 30MPH.
Gas mileage is better can shift into 5th gear at 40MPH thats 1000RPM on
level ground.
New lower gears are lots of fun little 289 and 2.73 rear end can really move
and the 0.68 OD on the fwy about 1850RPM is 65MPH
Having fun J
