Hi Folks,
I'm in a position where I need to buy some rods for my boss 302 motor.
Since I'm probably going to go with an after market rod is there any
opportunity here to pick up some cubic inches? Basically the motor I have
has basic 289 rods with 12.5 pop-ups. The Pistons are good and will be
re-used. The crank is .10/.10, needs a little polishing but otherwise will
be used. As for the rods, I'd like to go back with something a bit more
durable. I don't lift when I shift and I plan on making power from this
motor pass 7000 rpm. Needless to say I need to be sure the rods are going to
stay put. Having said that what are your thoughts with regards to using
rebuilt Boss 302 rods, NOS Boss 302 rods or some aftermarket sportsman type
rod? And again is there an opportunity to pick up some cubes? Is so is it
worth pursuing? Is there more power to be had from the Boss 302 when
stroked?
Thanks
James

James,
Changing your rods won't give you any extra cubic inches. You'll need
to swap out your crank to do that. There are several popular stroker
kits for the 302 these days, ranging from 317 CID to 347 CID. Because
you have BOSS heads, you'd need some really custom pistons for that, and
that starts to make things $$$
I just priced out a tricked out 347 for my '66 mustang the other day,
and after a $7,000 price tag I've decided to go another route. Sure,
it would make a ton of power, but there are easier ways to make power
Eagle makes some good aftermarket rods for about $500, which will easily
take 7000+ RPM all day.
