My wifes 68 is having some problems with the brakes
lately.

A while back I replaced the calipers, rotors, and pads
in the front and bled the brakes. This seemed to help
out a lot but it still didn't stop as good as I would
like it to. The pedal will go all the way to the
bottom if you try. I notice sometimes too it seems as
if its loosing or gaining vacume presure and the pedal
will sudenly sink a little too like when you're at a
stop sign or light.

The other day I was driving the car and it seems to
have almost no stopping power at all. I hear a
swoooshing noise when I depress the brake pedal but
the brakes just do not seem to be stoping like it
should...even worse now. I thought perhaps there was
no fluid in the master cylinder and this may have been
causing the hard stopping lately. Its full although I
did add a little bit a few weeks back.

Any ideas would be greatly welcomed. I know I must be
overlooking something obvious here but I'm not getting
it.

Thanks as always.

Michael,

Golly....

I recommend you replace the master cylinder and power assist units urgently
and don't drive the car anymore until you have! I'm fairly confident that
will instantly solve your problems.

While you are at it, pull the rear drums off and check that the rear
cylinders are OK. Use a small screwdriver to peak under the dust covers and
see if any fluid leaks out. If so replace those too.

Regards

Sounds like a bad master cylinder. You should be getting a brake
warning light. Buy another MC, and don't drive the car until you get
it installed.

If that doesn't solve your problem, tow it to a pro.

Just another idea; did you install the calipers on the correct side?
I've seen this happen a few times and it's easy to do. Feels like they
need to be bled, but you can bleed them all day and it won't help. If
you put them on backwards the bleeder passage won't be at the top and
you'll have a big air pocket trapped that you won't be able to get out.

I bought the calipers for each side one at a time. I
tried bleeding the brakes as it hadn't been done since
we had bought the car (a couple of years) and probably
hadn't been done in a long time previous because the
bleeder was frozen. It broke of and nothing would get
it out. I even broke a few easy outs and used a drill
too. So I replaced the one I messed up and went to do
the other side...same thing wouldn't you know. Just
wondering...how would I know if they were backwards
(if by chance the shop gave me the wrong ones for the
job each time)?

Michael, It sound like the master cylinder is the problem.. When you
remove the master cylinder check the back of it (where the rod goes into
it) and see if it is wet with brake fluid. If it is than you should change
the brake booster also. If enough fluid gets into the brake booster it can
cause the rubber diaphragm inside the booster to deteriorate causing a loss
of power assist. If the back is dry you would be OK just to change the
master cylinder.

I'll bet that its the booster. That swoooshing sound is the booster leaking
air when the pedals depressed. Must have a small rip in the diaphram. Try
pumping the pedal rockhard with the engine off and then starting the car with
your foot still on the pedal. If the booster is good, the pedal will move
down, If not the boosters on it's way out.

Had this happen to me once years ago Almost put my 68 galaxie under a semi.
Booster failed totally at 45mph. Scared the you know what out of me.

Best Wishes,
Steve

I'd check out the master cylinder!
