It sound like you might have:
At maximum a bad pressure control valve - stuck, blocked, etc.
At minimum a out-of-adjustment control valve - adjust it and be
done.
That "pop" sound ominous (no pun intended), along with the operational
difficulties.
No matter what you do - DO NOT PUT YOUR ARM THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL,
FOR ANY REASON!
Why you ask? If the valve fails and/or becomes fully functional to "1"
direction, and your arm is there, you could have it wrapped (your arm
force) around the column, most likely broken. Be aware of bad or
mal-adjusted power steering control valves!
So, Get a really good service book, locate the valve and make sure it is
in proper adjustment and operating condition.

Thought I'd add mine.
I had to replace all the components of my steering on my 68 coupe. The
PO had really screwed it up. Well now when I turn the steering wheel to
the right, it works great, but when I go the left there seems to be a
lot of pressure (harder to turn), When I start to turn the wheel back to
the right there is a POP and it gets easy to turn again. This does not
happen at just one place in the turn range, but any place. And only when
I turn right after turning left. I am positive that the tie rods or the
drag link is not contacting on anything. Also I just had an alignment
done.
It has non-intergal power streering.

For real excitement sometime, swap the hoses to the
control valve...and then touch the steering wheel after
starting the motor...... using all your strength you
can just barely control the wheel, as you reach for the key
to turn it off....
Gee, they sure looked like they were connected correctly....

control valve...and then touch the steering wheel after
starting the motor...... using all your strength you
can just barely control the wheel, as you reach for the key
to turn it off....

control valve, with the slave cylinder, it might have happened. What will be
the characteristics if this is the case. When I turn it to the left and let
go, the steering wheel will keep going on its own. When I turn it back to
the right I get the pop and then every thing is normal again.

The symptom will be: As soon as you turn one way,
the wheel will violently go back the other way.
It's a servo feedback, but the feedback is backwards!
And I believe once started, the wheel will spin back and
forth on it's own....until you stop it one way or another.
