Steering Box Overhaul

I want to do a performance restoration of my suspension and steering (66
Coupe). I remember reading an article a few years back about an outfit in
Southern California that does steering box overhauls / upgrades. My question
is (because I've been out of this for quite some time); What are the options
for rebuilding / upgrading / replacing the factory steering. I have power
steering and want to tighten it up and eliminate the play in the steering
wheel. If anyone can point me to possible solutions it would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd like to know also. I finally have the cash to buy a new Flaming River
unit but their warranty is only 1 yr. (IIRC) Is the new unit from Flaming
River that much better than a rebuild?? My steering's manual, so I know the
gear box is all I need (everything else has been replaced) As for you, Carl,
I think even with a new gear box & other components your power unit will
never feel "precise". That's been my experience with my 64.5 & 66.

As it happens, i just received my new steering box from Flaming River today.
The quality of the box seams OK, but the country of origin is listed as Argentina?
Is it better than a rebuild? don't know. It looks/feels solid and well made, but i wont really know until i get my
car on the road (wich will take several months).
One of the reasons i went with this unit was that you can have it with the quick ratio 16:1 (same as Shelby).
This should give you a better response than the original 19:1 steering box, but of course a little bit more heavy
steering.

I guess the biggest problem with rebuilding your original box is that there (AFAIK) is no more new parts
available.

I have since found some additional information about an outfit called Total
Control Products that has a trick looking racj and pinion set up as well as
other cool suspension upgrades. Unfortunately at quite a high price. Has
anybody had any experience with any of there products. The rack and pinion
sound especially nice and might well be worth the 1500 dollar cost. Would
apprceiate any comments.
