The following information applies to '71 and up only:
The staggered shocks, besides requiring the reverse plate, also has
a special upper mounting plate welded to the floor of the trunk.
The special upper mounting plate (on the drivers side), is welded
to the underside of the trunk above the rear axle. This "plate"
is a box like affair that extends from the left frame rail to just
shy of the diff. About 14" (I didn't measure it..) I am *assuming*
this box is *NOT* present on non staggered cars, as it would 1: Be obvious
and 2: I doubt they would waste the metal and labor to attach it.
The original shock mounting location on the drivers side, ahead of
the axle is present, but there is no hole drilled for the shock. (This
should make it pretty easy to tell an original staggered shock car
from a conversion. Also, inside the trunk you will find three oval
shaped plugs filling the upper mounting access hole. Obviously the
unibodys all have the two regular holes, and they add the third for
the staggered shock.
Any questions, class?
