A member on our list sent me an e-mail off line asking if I minded telling him
how much $$ my paint & body work was running.

He says he has a solid car with good floors and quarters, and just wants a ball
park of what to expect when he takes it in for an estimate.

Paint/body can vary TREMENDOUSLY depending on what you're starting with, and
just how nice of a job you want. I'm probably somewhere in the middle-to-high
end of the road on this one.

I figure if one person is asking, then perhaps others are wondering too, so I'm
posting my answer to him here.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone else on this topic too:

Sure, I don't mind telling you. But I hope it doesn't frighten you away!!!

My "estimate" was around $8,500 which I thought was actually a little low.

Right now the shop owner tells me we're a little bit over that. I figure when
all is said & done, I'll probably have between $9000 and $9500 in paint & body
and another $1000 to $1500 in the convertible top.

But unlike you, I was starting from a car with some pretty severe rot,
especially in the rear quarter panels. And I want a Show Quality paintjob when
it's done.

There's a LOT of labor involved in cutting out the quarters, re-building the
wheel wells, and welding in new quarters & the taillight panel. That's where
the majority of the labor has gone.

Another labor intensive area that they're spending a lot of time on is getting
all the minor waves/ripples out of the body panels.

That involves spraying on the primer, then spraying on a thin black "guide
coat". Then they block-sand the guide coat down until they get back to primer.
That shows them the high/low spots are that they still need to work out.

When all is said & done, my car's paint job "should" end up as middle of the
road ShowCar paint job.

A truly high-end ShowCar paint job could easily run as high as $15,000 and even
more than $20,000 depending on exactly how detailed the job is.

Hope that helps you. Hope it doesn't frighten you away. I did my son's car
last year at Maaco. I spent a LOT less $$ for it (around $4500) and it looks
fantastic! It too, had quite a bit of rust. Especially around the back window.

If you want to see his car, I have pictures of the complete restoration posted
on my website at robaldo.com/ProjectSpirit

I also had Maaco do my 94 Saleen several years back. Since there was VERY
little body work involved, it ran me about $800 for a basecoat/clearcoat paint
job. It still looks factory new today!

So depending on what needs to be done, and what you want for the end results, a
ballpark figure would be anywhere between $1000 and $10,000.

And quality. Your Maaco paint jobs look 100% nicer than the Maaco
``factory finish'' paint job on my coupe.

True. I wouldn't recommend Maaco if you really want a show-car paint job.

My convertible is NOT being done by Maaco. Even though they really did a good
job on my son's car, they aren't quite up to the standards that I want for my
convertible.

The shop I've taken the convertible to estimated over double what Maaco
estimated. But they're doing a whole lot more than Maaco would do, and they're
REALLY standing behind their work. The warranty is LIFETIME! And that includes
RUST!!!

Maaco would only give 5 years on paint, and wouldn't warrant against rust at
all..

When it comes to paint. You get what you pay for (.....if you're lucky.....).

Lance.
