I have just resubscribed to the list, after an absence of almost a year,
and I wanted to reintroduce myself to everybody. My name is Tom Noto and I
live in Northern VA. My daily driver is a 1996 Cobra Mustang (which I
bought in September of 1995) and I am currently in the process of restoring
a 1966 Mustang Convertible, which I have owned for many years and used to
drive daily in high school. Ultimately, I hope to have the 66 as my
"Pleasure Car" and restore it and tastefully modify it enough that I can
drive it regularly without fear of catastrophic loss of braking, breaking
down, or the chassis breaking in two!
The 66 is currently having the floor, inner rocker rails, torque boxes, and
other structural elements replaced by a shop near Philadelphia PA. When the
work is completed I plan on making the following changes:
1. Replace the 170K mile 200 ci 6 cylinder engine with a late eighties 302
HO motor converted to carburetion with an Autolite 4100 carb, Factory 4bbl
intake maifold, slightly hotter cam, Tri-Y Headers, and Duraspark ignition.
2. Replace the tired light duty c4 with an AOD.
3. Replace the front drums with Granada disks.
4. Completely rebuild the front suspension with V-8 parts.
5. Replace the 7.25 inch rear end with a 9 incher out of a Granada, or
budget permitting a 9 incher with disks out of a Lincoln Versailles.
Here are a few questions that I have:
When I replace the brakes, I know that I am going to have to replace the
wheels with 5 lugs, but I have also heard that normal 14 inch wheels wont
clear the Granada rotors. Did the Granda originally come with 15 inch
wheels or just different 14 inch wheels? What have people used in this swap
in the past. I am somewhat wary of using aftermarket wheels because I don't
want this car to be to muscular, just tough in a mid sixties sort of way. I
was thinking of Shelby

If you don't mind me asking, what is the price and time required for
this to occur?

Tom, I have a '66 coupe with some non- stock low visibility mods I like
very much: I have a 1 piece export brace and monte carlow bar
a-la-shelby, MSD ignition, an edelbrock matched set of cam, int manifold
and 4 bbl carb on my 'c' code 289. With the hood down it looks very
original. The single well master cyl and manual brakes are tough on the
legs sometimes but i can live with it. I have a stock C4 but dont do
alot of freeway driving so I dont miss the AOD. I would recommend the
1 pc export and monte carlo bar, They keep the car tight and flat in
turns. -just some of my opinions, Steve St Pete FL ((email redacted))
