I believe I've finally discovered the reason for the clunk in the =
rearend of my '68. After finally removing the third member and removing =
the ring gear. I noticed a broken pinion shaft lock pin. I assuming =
this is the cause for the clunk that I'm experiencing. I have yet to =
try to remove this broken pin, but it seems as if it is going to be =
quite a chore. I'm hoping that a drift will remove the broken pin. I =
hope the spider gears are reusable as there is a lot of metal debre. If =
the differential case is not rebuildable does anyone have any =
suggestions as to where I can find a new unit of an 8" rearend? Summit =
only sells for GM and Ford nine inch no 8" units are available. How =
about limited slip? Since I may have to replace the whole unit I may as =
well go for the limited slip. Any suggestions? thanks

Not too far from me, let me check with my local guy here. You want a posi, with what gear ratio? The whole assembly or just the pumpkin?

Ron,

Where are you located? I've already invested in a 8" rebuild kit $126. So
all I would need would be the posi unit and a ring and pinion with a ratio
of 1:3.55. Unless the whole pumpkin would be cheaper. Let me know I'm
curious.

I'm not sure how old this catalog I have is, but currie lists new
8" ring&pinion (3.00/3.55/3.80/4.11/4.63/5.43) @ $189. 8"
open diff($80), detriot($450), 4 spider TSD($390), 2 spider TSD($340),
auburn($380). complete 8" third members range from $440(open) upto
$870(detroit) with the other diff choices falling in between.
