ok- i need some help.
my 65 v8 convertible has started to make a big clunk from the rear whenever i
go over any bump bigger than abut 4" or so. it sounds as if the rear of the
car is hitting the road. steering and all other actions seem normal.

i assume this is what "bottoming out" is.

my question is - does this mean a rear leaf replacement? rear shocks? or
both?

i have done both on my previous mustang, but am hoping that it is just the
shocks, as that is the easiest of the two.

any advice?..and is it possible that it is something else entirely?

obviously, I would like to take care of it soon, as the summer driving months
are here!

thanks in advance,
david in boston

Check the shocks - take them loose from the rear at the bottom and compress
them by hand. If the action is not smooth, toss 'em. Could also be
bushings, etc. Another thing to try would be to put the rear of the body on
jack stands, then raise and lower the rear with a jack and watch what's
going on.

It'll be 104F here today, summer fun driving season is over.
