Hi All,

So, I have a 65 Coupe and I'm thinking of having a center lap belt
installed in the back so I can put my 3 1/2 year old daughter's car
seat in the center back (safest place) however I realize the Mustang
is considered a 4 person vehicle which means the rear center was
never designed to hold a person. But it still seams to me that it is
completely safe to use the two center hard points that would be used
for the inner seat belt connections for the left and right side rear
belts for holding not a person but a car seat. I have to wonder if it
is legal? or if it is not as safe as it seems from some engineering
standpoint that is beyond me? Can I get some advice?

You don't need to worry about legality of seat belts in a 50 year old car
that they were an option in to begin with, most didn't come with rear belts
at all. You can certainly bolt in a third set using the existing mounts (as
long as they are installed properly and not just bolted through a single
layer of sheet metal), many people do. The only thing you might run into
with a car seat is that the mounting points might be a little close together

Troy,

You'll be fine using the inboard mounts for a third set of seatbelts. You
can also install a top latch mount behind the seatback if you need one. I
have done this on a couple of cars to enable the use of a carseat.

Be sure to re-inforce any mounting point you put in the rear window
area with a thick plate of steel. In a crash, a simple bolt in the
sheet metal will rip right out. If you crawl under your car and look
at the seat belt bolts you'll see that this is what Ford did.

Definitely secure the top of the car seat to the rear package tray so
the car seat can't flop around in a collision...a lap belt alone isn't
safe enough.

This is what I did with my (now 7 year old) son's car seat. I added a three
point shoulder belt in the back once he got big enough for a booster seat.
I did reinforce it.
