I'm currently looking at buying a '66 San Jose built car and thought the
car is in great shape, I have a couple of questions. First the bumpers.
The first thing I noticed is the lack of the vertical chrome parts on
both the front and the back. My '66 fastback was sitting next to the car
in question so it was easy to compare. In the rear, there were bolts
holes, but they had bolt heads filling them. I can't remember if the
front did. If it's not original, it sure looked natural. Also the rear
valance looked like it could of have been a GT part as the back up lights
were placed where the exhaust would be unlike my Fastback which has the
lights placed under the tail lights.

The other questions was regarding a belt driven pump mounted above the
alternator. There were some hoses missing, but it appeared that one hose
ran towards the rear of the engine compartment and possibly to the fire
wall. The cars DSO district code was Los Angeles. Is this part of an
emissions system? Is this 1966 issue or was this added on.
I'm driving it tomorrow and will probable make an offer on it. Everything
looked great on it even though it has been repainted. The ID tag was on
the right place on the door, but was painted over.

One other thing I just remembered. There was standard bracing from the
shock tower to the firewall, but there was also an approximately 1"
tubular brace on each side running from the firewall to the inner fender
in to just in front of the shock tower. Could this be as stock
convertible thing or after market?

I'm really glad to be involved with this forum. Where else could I get
good answers to so many questions in a concise period of time. Thanks
everyone.

Bob

Just took a look at mine, a '66 GT convertible:

The rear bumper has two visible bolt heads on each
side, below the inside corner of the tail lights. One
bolt is on the top surface and the other is on the
more vertical surface

The backup lights are below the tail lights.

The belt driven pump is the California Thermactor/air
pump.

My car has the braces as you describe them. I believe
they are on all convertibles and do not indicate that
the car is a GT.

Good luck.

Must be referring to the bumper guards. Some owners remove them

Back up lights when installed as factory are at the same location GT and non
GT. Owners sometimes add them in the wrong location ;(

Thermactor emission system required on all California Mustangs delivered in
66

These braces were added in 65 and are correct for 66
