Hey all,
So Rapguard (the stuff that new cars come with) is unavailable to
regular consumers, Star Shield Armor isn't for classic mustangs, and I'm
searching for ideas. The 1970 convertible that I worked on in high school
is coming from PA to Oakland, CA in about a week and I'm trying to protect
the paint. It's not showroom paint, but it will last me a few more years.
I looked at a closed carrier shipment, but it was about $630 more expensive.
If anyone wants a review of my shipping experience (with Able Auto
Transport) I'll let you know.
Some buddies of mine Saran Wrapped my car in high school while I was
sleeping. Maybe that's not such a bad idea now ;-)
Anybody got any better ideas?
Joe

What about that stuff movers use to protect carpet? I don't know what to
call it or where to get it but you may try a moving company, U-Haul, or
possibly a carpet place. The stuff looks like 3 foot wide plastic wrap with
a sticky side. I don't think it would stick bad enough to mess up the paint
and it may last the trip if you wrap the edges around the body pannels out
of the high wind and overlaped from back to front so that it couldn't catch
an edge. If it does leave a little goo on the car you can possibly contact a
vinyl sign and graphics shop. They have a spray to take it off and it dosn't
remove the paint.
Also, normal rubbing alcohol would possibly do the trick.
I've noticed it a few times and thought it would be good masking plastic for
spot painting or covering wheels, windshield etc.
Just a thought that may help.
Chris
after writing that, I did a google search and found this
americover.com/reg/carpet.htm
It even has water based glue!

Look for something called Paint Mask, we buy it in 50 yard by 48 inch rolls.
It has low tack and is somewhat thick. You might even be able to find it
locally at a paint and body shop.
The only other thing I could think of would be "transfer". We use this to
mask vinyl for large vehicles and such. It is basically masking tape that
comes in rolls of 6"-54" by 300'. Any sign or graphics shop should have
this. It is super cheap and you could probably even double it up and gain
extra protection....
