I'd bet my money on the regulator. Had the same problem on my 73 pickup.

Hi all,

I agree 100% with Scott.

Just wanted to add that the old type voltage
regulators often have that pulsing light effect. If
you want to make sure you don't have this problem bolt
on a newer Motorcraft electronic voltage regulator.

Straight bolt on. You can also get brand X from most parts stores.

If you have an alternator, it's just a direct replacement. I'm not sure
about generator systems, but I would expect them to just bolt in too.

What year is this regulator from? Is this from the same year, only
electronic, or is it from a later model?

I think they used them from 1982.

As already mentioned it's bolt on so you can easily
change it out. I've even heard you can place the old
cover on the new unit so it looks stock, but I haven't
done this myself.

while we're on the charging system, i'd like to throw
one more question in...

what amp. alternator should we be running in a
289 4v with stock distribution & comp 260 cam.
no a/c, no big stereo

i'm also looking to move to the
pertronix points replacement unit ( in cap $50 model)...will
that make a difference.

thanks again

Anything you want...
Really, no electric fan, fuel pump, computer, etc. You only need the
original 55 or 60 Amp unit. You know, the $20 ones :-)

The Pertronix unit does not really use power, it's just
a more efficient method to time the release of coil
current/energy to the plugs.

I've installed two. For what they are, they seem to
do a good job.

The 110 amp units would be overkill for your needs.
60ish range will probably be fine.

This has got me thinking,,,,,,
Would a 110 amp unit use the same amount
of energy as the 60 amp if the load on the charging
system were the same? (Meaning, would a 110 amp
unit rob more HP from the engine because of the higher
output rating?)

Theoretically no. The extra capacity is just what the alt can do in peak
demand, not that it will on a continuous basis (thank God!, otherwise your
battery would blow up!).

There's another measure of alternators that is almost more useful, the rpm
vs. output curve. Some higher amp alternators actually put out less at the
same rpms. This could become a problem, although it's not very common.
Efficiency would be nice to know as well, but this info is hard to come by.
