Another solution is to stop using carbs that are too damn big for the
engines. That cuts down on backfiring!

Well, no, it isn't too big. I was trying to be cute.
Backfiring through the intake can be caused by late ignition timing
or too lean a mixture. Don't overlook burnt or misadjusted valves.
Or trying to run a healthy cam at too low a speed. Blocking the
manifold heat riser passages often results in fuel condensing on the
manifold runners at low speeds, which leans out the mixture.
