Hi All,

Has any one converted their car from power steering to manual steering using
the "Power Steering Conversion Adapter" that is in all the parts supplier
catalogs for ~$150.00??? Has it improved steering "tightness"??

I have been struggling with the power steering for years. I replaced the
original steering box with a rebuilt one which helped. But within 18 months
it was shot. I just replaced that box with a new steering box from Flaming
River. Huge improvement but when the engine compartment gets hot (289
w/headers) the steering loosens up quite a bit. On a recent trip out to Palm
Springs (105 degree weather) the car would get "blown" across the lane when
I'd pass a truck. When the car is "cool" the steering doesn't feel loose at
all.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
\Craig '67 Conv't

Just a thought, I've never done it myself but couldn't you put a
transmission cooler in the low pressure line? I've known of 4x4 guys doing
this because of the extra pressure needed to turn those big tires. A friends
camero has one also.

Just for your info, my 69 Galaxie has power steering and has a small finned
cooler attached to the low pressure return line. It's attached to the AC
unit and I'm sure that it serves it purpose well, especially since the lines
are just inches away from the exhaust manifold.

Power steering coolers are more common on late model 5.0's that see open
track duty. The constant high RPM's and strain causes them to puke their
fluid.
</start random guess>
I don't think that will help our original poster though, cause I think
his problem is in the box itself, not the pump or ram. the box sits
right next to the exhaust manifold and tubing or headers. As the motor
runs longer, the grease in the box gets heated up and thins out,
loosening the gears up just a touch.
</end random guess/>

What do Ya'll think? Way off base?

Power to Manual Steering?

I've often thought of going the other way. I now have the standard manual
steering, but at speeds the steering is very indirect and sloppy and around
town that half a dozen turns to lock just doesn't cut it. Is the original
power steering good or is there a lot of slop there too? What is the turn
ratio of both?

Good luck with the 65 Power Steering conversion. I have power steering in
my 65, and am trying to get it working. Ford was brilliant in 1965, and
made the Control Valve part of the main center link. This makes it nearly
impossible to buy a new/rebuilt unit. The cheapest I have found is $250
with a $300 core deposit. OUCH. Is it possible to put a 66 or later
centerlink/control valve into a 65? I would really like to convert to rack
an pinion, but that is about $1500. HAHA.

My car has manual steer, but Ive driven both. I definitely prefer manual
for a car used mainly on highway use, but it is very heavy round the parking
lots. I would only convert to power as a rack and pinion conversion.

If the headers are cooking the grease in your steering box, what about a
heat shield of some suitable material around the box, or around the nearest
header pipe?

It was just the Control valve the part that screws onto the center link
and attached to the pitman arm but it was less than half what the
Mustang places wanted for the same part. The part # is Atsco Rebuilt

It is not attached with screws. That is why it is so expensive. I wonder
if ford had two different parts they used in 65.

Are you sure that the control valve and the center link are one piece If
it is I have not ever seen one of those. All the ones I have seen is
threaded and screws over the threads on the end of the center link. you
have to remove the pin to remove it. Can you send a picture of it !!!!

I am pretty sure, as I have cleaned it all off, and can't find a place it
disconnects from. I put some pics up on my website. If you all could take
a look, maybe it is some sort of aftermarket thing someone added to the car.
It looks pretty original though. Here is the address:

I would tend to think its original as in all the parts catalogs I have
ever seen, the 65-66 centerlink always includes the control valve,
unlike the 67-69's...
