I have a problem with my power steering on my 68 Coupe. When I purchased the
car the pump was not mounted to the engine, but in the trunk. The pervious
owner had converted from the stock 289 to a souped up 351W. My problem is
that any of the mounts for the power steering that I have acquired will
work.( I have 4 sets of them now, to include a complete pump, lines, and
mounts from a 69 Fairlane that had a 351W in it.) I would really like to get
the power steering working. Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Did you mean to say "none" of them will work? Because if any of them
will work, I don't see a problem......

I have a '68 Coupe with p/s and a 351W. I used the original 302 bracket
that attaches to the front cover. I have the Windsor Sr. heads on the
car and had my friend fab up a crude, yet effective bracket to mount the
pump to the head. What exactly is the problem with your current
hardware?

The problem is that the mount that comes from the water pump is about an
inch off(either to the inside or out side) of the mount that goes onto the
head. I am not sure if the heads are a special type or not, but they are not
original 351Ws. Also the firing order is for a 302/289, but I am positive
that the engine is a 351W.

Thanks

I think you're in the same boat as I was. If your bracket that mounts
to the water pump is for a 289/302, you will most likely have to make a
plate or adapter that allows the power steering pump to bolt to the
plate, which in turn bolts to the head. Since the 351W is taller than
the 302, the mounting holes on the head will not line up. Also, if you
have after market heads, as I do, the bolt locations will vary from
stock. Like I said, I had a friend fab up a crude yet, effective plate
for me about 10 years ago that allowed me to attach the pump to the
head. Or, you can try and find a 351W power steering pump bracket. You
may still have issues with the heads if they're not original 351W heads.

Sorry I can't be of more help,

Sebastien

Thanks for the info, I will more than likely be manufacturing a mount for
the power steering.
