I loaded the list archives (by subject) from
antler.moose.to/~server/cm and used my browser to search for
'steering'. "Poor Man's Power Steering" and "power steering solution" talk
about converting to manual steering with a roller bearing instead of a
bushing in the idler arm.

"Excessive steering wheel play ('68) - Solved" points out that old cars
'age gracefully' i.e. more than one thing is likely to be broken: and this
guy's solution involved rebuilding the power control valve [the part I
remembered], rebuilding the steering box and then getting a proper front
end alignment.

One message on 'modulating power steering' that referred indirectly to a
product advertised in magazines, but no follow up on whether it worked, how
much it cost, or anything else.
