One of my projects this year is to convert my 70 from manual to power
steering.

In looking at what I need to change to mount the pump, I note that the
crankshaft pulley needs to be changed to dual groove. My question is
this - when I mount the dual grove crank pulley, what will line up with
what?

1. Does the alternator need to be repositioned forward to align with the
front groove, or is it already in the right place, or

2. Does the waterpump pulley have to be replaced so as to move its drive
groove back one?

Finally, does anyone have a powersteer pump and mounting hardware and/or
pulleys for a 351C they want to sell? (I don't need anything else because
I'm going to install a Total Control powered rack kit.)

Cheers

Hi Wal,

Checking my '69 302 with PS I think you need a double pulley in both the water
pump and crank. In my engine starting from the inside I have a belt that goes
around the crank, water pump and alternator. Then the next one out goes around
the crank, water pump and power steering pump. So I'm guessing that in your
case it would be the same and the alternator would not change place and the
pump would come to the level of the outer set of grooves.

I changed my pump some years back because it was noisy. As I did not want to
have to go through the hassle of sending mine to the US and waiting for
another one I did some looking around. As I guess you can relate it's hard
enought to get parts from the US, and even more both ways! So I was able to
get one from Mustangs Unlimited without an exchanged unit. I think now you
have to send them a pump in exchange but The Paddock still has them listed
with no exchange required.

Good Luck!

Hey Pat,

Many thanks for the comments.

In 70, Ford changed the front belt drive arrangement so that the alternator
was direct driven off the crankshaft, and the waterpump and powersteer pump
were run on the other circuit. The only reason i know this is because the
"70 Mustang Facts booklet"shows the revised set up (p 29). This set up
reduces vertical down load on the waterpump bearings. (The also changed the
crank to waterpump drive ratio from 2.4:1 on 69 models, to 3:1 on 70's. This
mod will improve cooling by spinning the waterpump faster, but will soak up
power. Its not clear to me whether they changed the diameter of the crank
pulley, or the water pump pulley to achieve this.

Thanks for that.. their web site doesnt list it, so I'll have to get a
catalogue. Were the pumps OEM, copies, or just a generic power steer pump
that will fit? What was the list price?

It may be that the hardest items to get will be the pulleys and pump mounts

Cheers

Wal

Hi Wal,

I guess I just learnt something new! Had no idea about this, thanks for
pointing out these changes from the 69 to 70.

I got the pump from Mustangs Unlimited for $80. Checking the catalog now,
looks like you might not need a exchange unit for your application listed as
'70 with 302 & 351 (does not say if 351W or 351C just 351) for $84.95 part
#6167. These are listed with a 90 day warranty and no pulley. They also have
the pulley for 70 302 or 351C 6 3/16 diameter at $170.60 OUCH! part #F2161.

If I remember correctly these are ford pumps that get rebuilt by some company.
The pump I got was identical on the outside to my original one. It's worked
noise and leak free for some time now. It even came with a booklet with
instructions and tips.

If you don't get it from Mustang Unlimited it's part #PAD01869 from the
Paddock at $101.95 (also just 351 listed) for the remanufactured limited life
time warranty ones they sell. Also If you want I can check what I get off the
booklet and box my pump came in.

HTH
