Hello again
I own a 1973 Mustang Convertible
I was considering having it painted
but when the estimate came in at six thousand dollars
I passed
Is that price about right? The quote did involve stripping off the old paint
Thank You

It kind of depends on what quality you want, if it's a color change and how
much body work. Also, if they take off the trim it will add to cost. If
you want a concours show quality it will cost more also.

I had my 66 painted recently and it cost $7500 here in Oregon (original
estimate was 5-6). My dad (who is a classic car collector) said based on the
quality of the job what I had done would have run more like $15,000 in
California where he lives. So the range that you could pay for a paint job
is enormous, and from my perspective $6000 isn't outrageous, though it's a
lot of money for me (I waited a long time to be able to afford the paint job
I got)!

My 65 ragtop is coming out of the shop in the next week to week & a half. I
put it in for paint & body. The estimate was $8500 and they stripped all
paint from the car. Once stripped, they found that the rear quarters, front
valence, and rear valence weren't salvageable. So the grand total is going
to be more like $9500 to $10K.

And THAT won't include the new top that's going to have to go on it!

So $6000 really isn't that outrageous a price for a quality paint job. You
can get a NEW car painted for less, if you have a good foundation and paint
over the old paint, but when you start stripping the old paint off, and run
into metal repairs, the costs go up.

If you can't afford it now, my advice is to save up until you can.

If you want to see the type of work I'm talking about, and just what you
likely will find once you strip the paint, just go to my two websites:

robaldo.com/ProjectSpirit is my son's 66 coupe, and

robaldo.com/ProjectTopless is my 65 convertible.
