73 351 Cleveland 2bbl.
HD rad 18 months ago, pressure checked/new cap 3 months ago and new
thermostat.
I can drive 40 miles on the turnpike at high speed and its fine, but
stopped at the toll both for about 10 mins and lost half gallon of
coolant-blew off the cap on the cheapo Pepboys overflow reservoir.
This has happened a couple of times recently.Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Adrian

Adrian,

The opposite happened to me. The coolant would blow out
of my reservoir at highway speeds, but at idle was OK.
It was frustrating. I had a minor leak in my head
gasket that required the high pressure of highway speeds
of "getting on it" to cause the leak. The car idled
fine.

It doesn't sound like the same thing as what you've got.

Also try running the car with the cap off at idle and
watch the coolant level. Top off as needed and try to
run it. I had a "bubble" in the radiator once that
caused the same thing.

I've not got that problem solved. 180 degree
thermostat, and I had to run the car at idle with the
cap off to get rid of the bubble in the block.

I can understand your frustration. I lived with it for
several years!

Just some thoughts,
Dave

Had this problem with my 70 351C-4V: new thermo, sending unit, fan
shroud, belts, hoses, recored the radiator; didn't help. Then I read
about the flow restrictor plate - a metal washer sitting under the
thermostat that slows down the speed of the coolant passing thru the
radiator so it spends more time in there and cools at speeds below 60MPH.

Check it out in the shop manual.

Thanks,John
I am quite puzzled, now.I went for a 10 mile fast run a few days ago then idled the
car outside on 90 degree heat for 45 mins.NO boiling over at all.
BTW,my son was the driver to my office,20 miles on the turnpike and he was in a long
line at the toll boot when it boiled!

Hi all, I am new to the list but this actually
relates to something I was going to ask, so here
goes! :-)

I have the same problem with my '70 Cleveland 2V.
Seems like I read a long time ago about a water
passage that can be drilled on the block face
where it mates to the head... that there is a
passage in the head that is not open to the
block, or only open on one end. Is that true? If
so, I would like to make that mod now, since I am
about to pull the heads in favor of some Aussie
2V closed chamber heads :-)

Thanks!
