ok , so i have resorted to reading the book that came with the edelbrock
carb. it says to only hook trans vacuum line or brake booster line to the port on
the back of the carb itself. i had the pcv going to this port. so as i was
removing the pcv and brake vac lines to switch them , i found that the brake
booster vac line was wet on the bottom....with gas....there is a vacuum leak.

i switched the brake vac line to the port on the carb , and put the pcv
hose on the port in the manifold just below the carb. (edelbrock performer rpm
manifold).
after re-doing all the vac lines , the vac gauge needle is steady at
about 14-15. it doesnt shake around like it did before.the idle is much smoother
and the exhaust stink is a whole lot better.

but my timing marks are still way off from the pointer......

one big victory....but i am still confused about the timing marks

this is the most vacuum i could get by turning the distributor. if i advance
it more , the engine stalls, if i retard it the vacuum keeps dropping until i
get to a point where the engine stalls that way too.

thanks to dave, leland and cliff for the input so far.....

Yeah I'm kind of confused on this timing mark issue. I can accept that the
accuracy of the balancer (even new) could be off. And the indexing of the
cam could be off. But even the combined amount of inaccuracy seems it
shouldn't be as much as my timing mark shows when the timing is set for max
vacuum. It reads off the scale past 30 deg. I'm still looking into the
possibility that the balancer is actually meant to be on an engine that has
the pointer on the passenger side.
