Okay, I'm getting just a little frustrated.
I put a "Ford Racing" dress-up kit on my '65 289. (Can't have too much
chrome!)
I've tried rubber, cork and cork with spacer gaskets, a little gasket
adhesive, a lot of gasket adhesive, light torque on the bolts, more torque
on the bolts.
What are the tricks to keep the valve covers from leaking. (above number 7
cylinder - just enough oil leaks out that you can smell it burn as it gets
to the exhaust manifold...
Thanks for the help

Use Cork (gets hard change gaskets @ six months or so,DONT crank down the Valve Covers) If they are bent they will always leak. Im old need something to do,also check the valve lash, keeps hands busy. Is it a stamped steel type valve cover? I've had horrible luck with those.
If so, make sure the bolt holes arn't dimpled in and try getting a set of
the washers that are designed to spread out the load of the bolt head. My
local Pep Boys has them in the "flashy chrome" sectrion. Use a cork gasket,
and the thin paint on stuff from Mr. Gasket that looks like tar on both
sides. Make sure every surface is clean of oil. Torque em down to just
barely hand tight around 12 to 15. Either use a heatgun to heat up the
sealer or let it sit for a day before filling with oil.
The solid aluminum covers with thick lip and rubber style gasket (97 Ford
explorer 5.0 will get the right set) works best.

I use gasket seal only on the valve cover side of the gasket. Let it
set up good and then put strings through the holes to be sure the gasket stays
in place when putting them down on the heads. Cut the string and put the
bolts in. Never had a problem with cork gaskets myself.

Stamped steel. I got it solved...
I put a small wire brush on the dremel tool and roughed up the chrome on the
seal area. The adhesive worked much better.
No more leak..
Thanks for all of your suggestions.
