Recently I purchased the Black Crinkle valve covers for my 351C. I also
purchased the chrome FORD twist on breather caps to go with them. The
supplier that I obtained these items from said that this combination
will work together. Unfortunately a large amount of oil leaks out of
both breather caps. Any suggestions on what I can do to stop this?

Thanks!!

Jim,

What valve covers and breather caps did you get? Are these the Ford Motorsport
v/c's and Motorsprot breathers or some other mfg? Is the oil leaking from the
breather cap itself, thru the cap "vents", or at the cap/valve cover gasket
(since you stated twist-on, as a push-in would have a bigger rubber affair)?

I think that oftentimes a special grommet is required in the valve cover. What
is your supplier's response?

The breather caps are definitely FORD Motorsport. I don't recall what
the valve covers are. I'd have to look in the catalog to remember..
They are black crinkle and say "351 Cleveland" on them.

>thru the cap "vents"
The cap is actually not vented, but it was listed in the catalog as a
breather cap.

>cap/valve cover gasket

Yes, they do appear to be leaking at the breather cap gasket.

>your supplier's response?

Thus far I have only been able to speak with a sales person who did not
have an answer for this. I was given the number of the tech. line, but
no one picks up.

Thanks again!

351Cs normally have the PCV valve in one of the breathers. I *assume*
you don't have both valve covers plugged with these non-vented caps?
This would lead to crankcase pressure build up.

Is your PCV hooked up and working? Without it the crankcase pressure will
blow oil out the breathers and eventually out the front and rear crank seals.

I believe everone has given good suggestions one additional pick would
be to check the baffles on the valve covers under the breathers. Many of
the cheaper made valave covers lack the baffles and will splah and push
oil out the cars. For push in style breathers there is a fix for this
on twist in I know of nothing short of adding a shield or baffle

What is the trick for push style breather caps? I'm having the same
problem...

When used with aftermarket valave covers Moroso sells (or at least use
to) a breather sealer that fits in the valve covers and you press the
breather in place. These came uncut at the bottom (rounded dome end) and
I found that by cutting a smaller round hole or a 1/2 slit in the end
splashing oil did not make its way to the breather as easliy as it did
when completely removed.

Thanks!! I'm going to check the PCV and if that doesn't do it, I'll
look into the sealer.
