Recently, I installed a new speedometer cable in my '65 Mustang =
Convertible.
It is a 3-speed car and lately, the speedometer cable has been making =
the most awful noise, chattering excessivly, and I'm not sure what the =
problem is.
Has anyone out there seen or heard of this before . . . and what the =
solution may be.

I have had a half-dozen cases similar to the ones described over the years.=
In each case, the speedometer cable was at fault. 3 or 4 times it was=
lack of proper lubrication (see your manual for the proper procedures) and=
a couple of times it was separated or broken cable wires. I would suggest=
to first remove, clean and inspect the cable and possibly the cable sheath=
before making any assumptions. Lubricating the cable will take about=
10-15 minutes at a leisurely pace your first time and will likely fix the=
problem. If not - then take a look at the speedo. I was told years ago=
by an 'older-than-dirt' mechanic that (usually) a rhythmic noise or motion=
was the cable and a constant noise was the speedo, bushings, tranny drive=
gear, etc.
FWIW,
David M.

Thanks for passing along the "sage" advice
my mustang spends most of her time in the garage during the winter and I'm always after her with lube when I bring her back out into the sun........should have thought of that...........

Dear Horseman,
I too have encountered this problem, but my =
remedy was simple. The cable was taking a different route behind the dash =
and the square drive on the inner cable was not pushing in square. Due the =
the angle it was putting pressure on the inner drum like thingo, and =
causing it to occasionally grab but more often just make a ticking noise. =
once I lined the cable cable up square, even used a panduit strap to keep =
it there it has been noise and wobble free. Nb. the nut was tight on the =
back of the speedo which at first made it look O.K. but its the inner =
that causes the noise.

Just curious..what is the proper lub for a speedo cable? From past
experience ive found that grease and engine oil are too thick, or have to be
used in very light coats. So the last time the cable started "jerking", I
just pulled the inner cable and gave the sheath a 1 sec burst down the
centre with a can of WD40. That seemed to work quite well.....

Ah..of course a dry lub would be perfect. Ive got a puffer pack of graphite
powder so that should work quite well. I'll try it next time.

Maybe you should try lubing the cable. Worked on my 72, JC Whitney sells =
the adapter and chain lube works great.
