Newbie Question Of The Week: What's the "Green Dot" all about?

As a newbie, I've got hundreds of questions; but rather than flood
this forum with all my goofy queries, I'll just ask one per week.
I humbly beg the indulgence of those to whom this is old hat, but
my experience here thus far shows you guys to be patient teachers.
Thus, my first Newbie Question Of The Week: What's the "Green Dot"
all about?
I recently had my C-4 transmission rebuilt, and the guy explained
that I should drive around town on the "Green Dot" setting, but
that when I get on the freeway I should shift to the "little dot".
I've been doing as he suggested, but when I make the shift (and
thereafter) I can't tell that anything has changed.
So what's the deal with the Green Dot? Do I really need to shift?
Does it benefit me in performance? Economy? Longevity?

Get a new mechanic who knows C-4 transmissions.
According to my Ford owners manual, you should drive in the green dot pretty
much ALWAYS. That way the transmission uses all three gears the way it should.
The other dot starts the car off in 2nd gear instead of first.
The original idea was that in slippery conditions such as rain or snow, you
would want to start in 2nd gear so as to not spin the tires upon taking off.
It's an idea that never really caught on....

I know several responses have been posted. Hopefully you have your answer,
but just in case it's still a bit unclear, here's my description.
The green dot is normal drive. The funny thing is that it is located two
detents past Neutral where second gear is on modern trannys. Assuming you
have the original tranny you would want to select the green dot for all
driving.
The little dot (first detent past Neutral) starts in 2nd then shifts to 3rd.
It forces the car to start out in second for better traction in snow.
It gets weird if you install a later vintage tranny with the oringal bezel,
like my 66 coupe. My bezle has the green dot, but because my tranny is 72
vintage, I need to select the little dot just off Neutral.
