Hi, I am new to the Mustang list. I have a '68 Cougar XR-7 with the 302-4V engine and hope you don't mind me joining this list. There are many parts between the Cougar and Mustang that are shared, and many of the topics that are discussed on the Mustang list are informative to me.
I am currently rebuilding my front suspension, and I'm wondering what the original color of the steering gear box is. As far as I can tell, the '68 Cougar and Mustang share the same front suspension. I have power steering and the steering box has a 1 1/8" shaft. When I was cleaning the box, I could tell that it had been painted black. What is confusing to me is that in-between the cast "FOMOCO" letters, I have found traces of Ford Blue paint, leading me to wonder if it was originally blue. Anybody know what the original color was? I am trying to restore the look of my Cougar to original.
Thanks,
Scott H.

The original finish of the steering box - the body is cast with a
shinner upper area where the body has been machined and threaded. At the
bottom you'll find a plug which will be galvanized or bright steel.
During the assembly multiple assemblers and inspectors marked and
checked the unit. These people placed spray daubes and marks with crayon
type tools. You can often find white, yellow and blue spray marks likely
indicating style and type (PS or non-PS for example)
Hope this helps

I'm doing the same to my 70 coupe, and I was told that its as cast. No paint.
Wile cleaning mine, I also found traces of blue paint. probley just overspray
from the motor or something. The factory could be sloppy some times.

Since the engine was painted thousands of miles away the engine plant
must have produced enought overspray that it also got on the Washington
Monument
You'll find that it was likely an inspection/identification mark.

Good point. I guess I forgot about that.
Just to save some face the motor could have been repainted. Yea that's it,
repainted.
