Hey everyone. This is only like the second time I've posted to the =
list...the first time was way back in August when I'd first gotten my =
'68. So far it's been relatively problem free and it's been a fabulous =
car to own. However, my parents have been pushing me to get some safer =
brakes, so I decided to convert to disc brakes using the kit from =
California Mustang. Also, all of my guy friends get this huge kick out =
of telling me my rear end is sagging (16 and 17-year-old guys can be so =
mature...), so I've decided to do the suspension too and see if that =
helps it...because it really is saggy. This is the first time I've tried =
to do anything major with this car, I realize I'm probably nuts. I know =
it's a lot of work and something I maybe even shouldn't attempt to do, =
but oh well. I'll learn from my mistakes. So anyway, the point of this =
message is...any advice? I can't really be convinced not to do it at =
this point, but if there's anything I should know before I jump in, =
please tell me. I've got my dad and a couple guy friends lined up to =
help me out, but I'd like the advice from some real Mustang people as =
well.

Rachel,

Rachel,
Full marks for being prepared to give it a go.
Make sure you have a access to a good tool kit, a workshop manual, and some
advice and assistance as necessary from an experienced "car guy".
Removing and replacing the rear springs is not a particularly difficult
task, but its a real problem area for seized bolts. Before starting, order
your replacement springs, and while you are waiting climb under the car and
soak every bolt that attaches the rear springs to the car with a good spray
on penetrating oil. (Rear shackles, axle U bolts, front eye bolts). Then
after a day or so do it all again, and hopefully they will all come undone.
Good luck
Wal

If you have questions on adding front discs, post 'em. Plenty of list
members have converted to front discs.

Start soaking the front leaf spring bolts now and keep working on
them until the new springs come. They get siezed and difficult to
remove. I'd soak all bolts (leaf spring bolts, U bolts, shackles).
You will need at least 4 jack stands (two to support the rear end and two
to support the rear of the Mustang).
Also, check the rear brake hose while you are under there.
