Had the '66 at a show-and-shine at a local dealer yesterday, and to my
surprise, I went in the door and right in front of me was a 2007 Shelby
GT500, the first in Colorado. WOW! What a vehicle! That sucker looks
like it's going 500mph just standing still. Had a price tag of $45k, but I
believe the dealer is tacking on $10-15k more as a ripoff...er..."premium"...
But I gotta say, it's one hot vehicle...

You're the first report I've heard of a dealer sighting....
Ford is bringing two GT500s to the Monterey Historics next
weekend and parking them in the Nor Cal Shelby club corral...
A magazine writer is also bringing a Hertz car to display...
If you're in Northern California, worth a visit on Saturday Aug 19
... well, the ticket price is kinda steep... $65 .. but lots
of great cars to see....

Inquiring minds want to know. When will they deliver it to your house?
You DID have your checkbook, didn't you?
What color was it?

HAH! I'm #14 on the list, and they're only getting 8...besides, for $60k,
the future doesn't look too bright...*sigh*...

My wife hung onto it for dear life.

Red w/black stripes. VERY cool looking! And the only time I've ever seen
a fuller engine bay was back in the early 70's when MG put a 351 Cleveland
into an MGB (not for export to the US).

I've had one (Hertz model) this last week ... goes back Thursday. Get allot of attention from the Tuner and under 20 crowd.
After the rental... don't think I would buy one Just one opinion

Be glad it was only that much in Colorado. In Washington State, they are averaging $70-75K.

Jeff,
The Shelby GT-H is not the same car as the Shelby GT500. The GT-H is nothing more that a GT with one of the FRPP performance packs installed, a new hood and a few other tweaks. It only has 325HP (the GT has 300HP and the GT500 has 500HP). Totally different animals. The latest MM announced that in January you will be able to buy a Shelby GT, which is the same thing as the Shelby GT-H w/o the Black and Gold.

Just attended the MCA national show in Erie Penn and thought while I was there (planned to travel up through Niagara Falls and Ontario for a week) I might see if a Shelby was available. Well really wasn't planning on getting a Shelby as I had heard everyone saying how difficult there were to rent currently but when checking out available cars online I say the Shelby drop-down and clicked on it. The website showed that the airport I was flying into (Cleveland) had them available and that there were a special offer I could get in connection with my Marriot rewards member ship (10% off the total bill)
So I arrived late Thursday night and had been forewarned by others that the rental process was longer than normal. So on arrival I gave them a couple of credit cards and the little lady behind the counter stated that she needed to fill out a form before I could lead. Once outside she tossed the clip board on the hood and started to slide it around as she began checking off all the Shelby and Hertz emblems and other items. Sill plates, dash plaque, fender emblems, wheel center and so on. Then we moved to the engine compartment. I helped her figure out how hood pins work and in the engine compartment there was a fuel regulator that had to be identified and a tamper-proof engine wire that had to be confirmed.
Took the car to the show for the first few days... of course since it???s new got allot of looks. Show chairperson allowed me to park it in the show area since it was a draw (guessing this will be good for about 6-8 months before this wears off. Then spend the rest of the week driving over local roads and freeways in four states and though Canada putting on a total of 900 miles.
Impressions (really did not think about what I was expecting before the rental so no preconceived notions - this could be good or bad for forming the final impression)
1. Car is an attention magnet. Where ever parked tourist and locals have there pictures taken with the car, teenagers will line up at drive-up windows to get a look. Of course the "look" and magazine articles will entice every hot foot with a tuner car or beater Chevy to want to race.
2. Sacrifices for style and handling - Car has little ground clearance and will drag on most speed bumps. Suspension is very stiff and every tar strip on a Michigan toll road will be felt - will not even mention what potholes will do the ride and how quickly they will get your attention at speed at midnight.
3. Acceleration is ok. Road test suggest mid 13 quarter miles and the car feels like that is likely (didn't check the horsepower though a portable dyno was available at the car show) At freeway speeds the acceleration is more noticeable than from a stop as a Viper and Porsche owner in Ohio found out. Like any of our cars it will be easy to exceed twice the legal speed on most freeways.
4. Handling - as previously mentioned (and I expect the suspension is very similar to the GT500) the suspension is very firm. I also found that IMHO there was considerable amount of under steer unless you attempt a full drift (balancing bringing the rear around while the front under steers) while making a hard turn
5. Typical issues for the Mustang interior. For a guy my size (6' 4"
I thought it very odd that I found that the shoulder harness was mounted too high for my comfort once I adjusted the seat. And to my disappointment that upper mount is not adjustable as are almost all other production cars. The console rubs the right leg at all time and the console is so high that any use of the cup holder blocks the shifter.
These cars are very akin to the original Shelbys. They are flashy and grab allot of attention when there are first released and like the original will likely IMHO fade quickly as the newness and ho-hum performance is realized by the car crowd.
For the future owners and restorers of these cars.... I found it interesting that these cars appear to be painted all gold (interior floor pans and trunk are painted gold). I also thought I would start something for the car guys that rent these cars. If you rent one find a hidden place on the car to sign you name and the date using a Sharpie or similar marker. May take a little work and disassembly but I think it???s worth it to put a smile on some future owners face - I did
Well those are my experiances and comments related to the car.... other's opinions, I'm sure, will vary
Almost forgot. The cost
Weekly Rental - $499
Extra Miles - $.39 per mile
One Week, Approx 900 miles and 10% off (with all the add on fees) ran me about $730
One week = a fun experiance I likely will not do again. And no tickets
