Hey everyone. I've been lurking on this list for probably over a year =
now but figured it was time to introduce myself now that I actually have =
a Mustang. I've been the proud owner of a '68 coupe for about six hours =
now and can't even begin to tell you how excited I am. It's my first car =
and my dream car so I'm feeling pretty lucky right now. The car is in =
excellent shape w/new springtime yellow paint and a black interior. It's =
an automatic with a 289 V8 and has power steering and shoulder belts =
which I believe are original but I'm not sure about them (I know it was =
a rarely used option in '68 but I've never seen a picture so I'm not =
sure if they're it or not). It's also got aftermarket air conditioning. =
Anyway. Hope you guys don't mind my being overly excited (although I =
guess you would understand the excitement more than most people) and I =
hope you can deal with my stupid questions as I learn about my car. I =
can't wait to start working on it.

Congratulations Rachel. My first car (and the one I learned to drive
in) was a '66 my parents bought new for their transportation that I got
as a "hand-me-down", thankfully I still have it. I can understand your
excitement; I lived it with the '66, again when I got my '70 Boss, and I
got to see it again when my wife got her '86 SVO (I think she outdid me
in the excitement catagory though).
No question is stupid, we all asked them at one time or another; that is
what this list is for. We are all learning from others questions.
Since you've been on the list for a year, you probably already know
this.
Congratulations again.

We were just as excited about getting our 68 which sounds just like yours,
including the shoulder belts which came with the car orginally. There are no
stupid questions, have fun!

Rachel,
Welcome to the club.
My first new car was a '67 GT 2+2 (oh, how I wish I knew then....) and I'm
not sure I felt a rush quite like that again until I decided the budget would
spring for the 65 coupe that's now sitting in my gagage waiitng for me to
finish the front disc brake conversion.
You'll have a blast, and I am sure find this group a very helpful source of
info and support.
John O'Dell

Congradulations! Makes you feel like you're 17 again, right?

My parents bought a '68 Mustang on my birthday in 1968, Meadowlark Yellow
(code W) black vinyl top, w/289-2V (C-code) & PS. I got the car in 1977
w/66k miles. Drove the car to college. When it blew a head gasket in '82
at 115k miles, I parked it at my father's store. 6 months later (while I
was still trying to figure out how to fix the head gasket, my dad traded
the car for 2 oil changes, a brake job, and an emissions inspection to a
local gas station owner. The car was restored and sold to a collector in
San Diego in '84. It's been in books and magazines since then. Your
story brought back memories. I loved that car! I still have the original
bill of sale, owners manual, owners card, keys, registration, door data
plate, and lots of pictures. Sigh ...

Anyway, I now specialize in 67-68 Mustangs, have judged them at MCA shows,
and currently own a 67 GT convertible (289-4V) and a 67 Shelby GT350
(Shelby modified HiPo 289 w/Paxton Supercharger). All because of the
yellow '68 coupe that dad drove home one afternoon.

No one was born with the knowledge; we're all here to help.

First thing to do, IMHO, is research the car. Find out everything you can
about your car. Get some books: "How to Restore Your Mustang", "The Mustang
Restoration Handbook", "The 1968 Mustang Facts Book", "The Mustang Red Book",
"The Mustang Buyers Guide", "The Mustang Recognition Guide", etc., plus the
"1968 Shop Manual". Any of the Mustang vendors carries them. Photograph
your car & make notes. Then decide:

- What you want your car to be when your done (driver, show car, etc.)
- How much you can afford to spend & your timeframe
- What you can do yourself vs work to be farmed out

Once you answer these questions, we can help you make a plan to accomplish
your goals.

Hope this helped!
