Did anyone else notice that when the interior was shown on this one, it
magically turned into a '65? Must have had something to do with the
transmission. From the outside, you can't really see the driver of the
car (probably a stunt, or "precision" driver) as it lurches along. On
the inside, you can see an automatic shift handle next to the young
actress. May have been a case of the actress not being proficient with a
stick (manual trans in the '67?) and they brought in the auto '65
thinking nobody would notice.
And further on the 'Cars on Screen' subject, the "Radar Love" video was
by a Hair Band called "White Lion", circa 1987. The song was a remake of
the original by another band called "Golden Earring", who were a staple
of MTV in its infancy. In either version, it's arguably the best damn
"Pedal-to-the-Metal, Open-'er-Up, Yeeeeeehaaa!!!" song ever recorded. I
always found myself doing at least 20mph over the limit whenever it came
on the radio.
Finally, someone posted an inquiry about a Richard Grieco movie
co-starring a '70 fastback. It's called "Born to Run", Fox Video, 1994.
I have the film on Laser Disc and it's pretty bad. I bought it just
because of the Mustang on the cover. Just your basic low-budget
"hoodlums street racing" flick. The synopsis on the cover promises a
"428 Cobra Jet Mach 1 Mustang". Actually appears to be a regular '70
fastback with big wheels and tires and an ugly mailbox hood scoop. Bad
script, lousy plot, sped-up racing scenes. They even run about half of
the drag races on wet roads (!). Good thing it was on sale.

'65 coupe
'68 fastback (Bullitt replica)
'89 Merkur XR4Ti (hey, it's a Ford)

My kids watch a little TV every morning before school and their latest
find has been Spencer for Hire. They told me to watch cause, "He drives
a fastback Mustang like yours, Dad." The difference is mine is Red and
Spencers is kind of a real dark Green or Black. Not sure of the year,
either '65 or '66. I cringe every time someone starts shooting at
Spencer and he uses the car as a shield, although, I've never seen any
bullit holes in it except once when the bullit hit the winshield. Any
other cool TV Mustangs?

Hey Larry,
The Spenser For Hire Car(Actually all three of them) was painted a very
Dark Green Metallic. I was up in the Boston area back when they were filming,
and they were all painted dark green. I spoke with one of the stunt guys(Robert
Urick did most, but not all of his own driving), who told me two cars where
setup for interior, moving car shots(both automatics), while one car had a
modified 289 4V(toploader 4spd) for stunt work, and bullet holes(yes people,
real bullit holes where shot into the car for several scenes)...Thats about all
I remember about them, but it was cool to be on the set....
Hope this is helpful.

In a movie I saw on Showtime or some movie channel, I believe they blew up
a boss 302...it's been a while so I cant say for sure...the movie isnt that
old...it was called "Metro" about some police officers, and the bad guy's
get away car in the very end of the movie was this mustang...I nearly cried
for the car in that scene. If anyone else has seen this movie and
remembers, I'd love to know!

What about the episode where the Arnold family goes to the Ford dealership
to buy a new car, and Kevin has his eye on the new Mustang, I can't for the
life of me remember what year, but, I think it was a '69, and after the
family cajoles him about the Mustang, Dad buys a station wagon...

That show was called "Charlie Grace". Got good reviews but was in a bad
time slot (Saturday night, I believe) and ABC pulled it after about 6 or
8 episodes. One of the charachteristics of the series was that a lot of
effort was put into it always having a "sunset" look to the exterior
scenes (Harmon played an L.A.-based private eye). That fastback looked
great with the orange light illuminating the gold C-stripe.
Here's the weird thing. That same fastback was used the season before on
a Robert Conrad show that was also short-lived. The car was driven by
the teenage son of Conrad's charachter - often on dirt roads.
The car is (was?) owned by a company here in North Hollywood that rents
vehicles to production companies. Don't know if that Mustang was a jinx,
but it seemed to be attached to doomed shows. I have an actor friend who
has starred in several TV series over the years and makes lots of
Pilots, hoping for the Next Big Hit. I warned him about that Mustang
(tongue in cheek), "If you're involved in a show and you see that
Acapulco Blue fastback, suggest they use another car."
And regarding The Wonder Years, there was an episode in which the family
went shopping for a new car. The focus car at the dealership was (I
believe) a red '69 Mustang convertible (tight squeeze for a family of 5,
I thought). As the story unfolded, they were ready to buy the car but
the deal fell through. They ended up with a Torino wagon or something.

There is another WONDER YEARS episode where the family is considering
purchasing a new red '69 convertible with a white top (from what I
remember). The dad gets mad at the insulting trade in price, but they
eventually get a Galaxie(?).
And let's not forget 21 Jump Street on Fox a few years back. I think
it was Johnny Depp's character who drove a light blue '67 (or was it a
'68?) Fastback. Geez, my memory is really foggy.

I guess we'll beat this subject into the ground, but... Anyone remember
"The FBI" series from the 60s and 70s? It was heavily sponsored by Ford,
and literally *every* vehicle shown in each episode was some kind of
Ford product.
But the coolest part was during the closing credits. Efram Zimbalist Jr.
would leave the FBI building and head home through the streets of D.C.
in some new Ford. During the '67 model year he was in a Mustang
convertible with SS wheels and pinstipe whitewalls. The car was black
with a red interior (top down in that always-mild D.C. weather,
naturally
). Other years he was seen in T-Birds, Galaxies, etc.
I think Nick at Nite was running these a few years back, and that was
when I noticed the Mustang (no, I don't have that good a memory from the
age of 5). Perhaps they'll show up in reruns again somewhere.

In 1966, he was driving a dark green Mustang GT ragtop
with what looked like a black pony interior. I can't
recall the wheels...what I remember most is that Efrem
wasn't much of a driver. ;-)

All this talk about Mustangs and cop shows brought back
one of my favorite times as a police officer. When I
supervised our narcotics unit we had the dirt bag of all
dirt bags driving around in a '70 Mach I 351 4v, maroon
with gold stripes. This guy escaped our clutches once and
never let us forget about it. But of course every tweeker has
his day, and we finally busted him with a fair amount of meth
heroin. It sure was nice driving that drug seizure around for
about 2 years! I got a lot of offers at red lights to buy it.
Eventually cancer took over the towers and I had to give it up
for auction. The good part is that the guy that bought it fully
restored it. The bad part was that he also found our missing
police radio in the process! I had a lot of splainin' to do!
Great memories!

Watched "The Housesitter" last night - Steve MArtin/Goldie Hawn. He drives
a lovely red on red 66 ragtop and the car is shown quite often in the film.
Also, a red ragtop is seen in ID4 and one of the team in Pensacola- Wings
of Gold drives a red 66. Did Ford make 66 convertibles in other colours ??

Believe it or not, yes ;-) - but it sure seems odd
to see anything besides red, nowadays. There's just
something about those cars...maybe its a subliminal
message they sneaked in at the factory? "Must paint
red...must paint red..." :-)
On a serious note, I can only remember seeing maybe
three Philadelphia-DSO'd '66 convertibles which were
originally red. Out here, it seems the most popular
1966 colors were Burgundy, plus shades of green and
blue. In fact, there are more Burgundy & black roof
hardtops than you might safely shake a stick at.

okay, I've got a "famous Mustang" reference for y'all that dont think
anyone has mentioned yet... and I'm a bit surprised since it features none
other than Chad McQueen, son of Steve McQueen, driving a very familliar
dark green '68 fastback... it was called "Red Line".
alright, maybe it's not that surprising that no one else has mentioned this
since it was a pretty crappy movie that I think may have been a "straight
to cable" type of production. the co-stars included Dom DeLuise, Jan
Michael Vincent and Cory Feldman(!)...

Never thought the thread would go this far, but it really seems to be
popular with our crowd. I've saved a rather esoteric one.
In the late 1970s there was a spinoff of "The Rockford Files" called
"Richie Brockleman, Private Eye". He was essentially a clever, younger
version of Rockford, and his ride was a ratty 65or6 Mustang convertible.
(And hey, whaddaya know, it was red!)
Though I was kinda young at the time, I knew cars pretty well and my
folks had a '68 Mustang convertible. In one episode I spotted a huge
goof. He needed to distract a vicious dog behind a door, so he goes to
the Mustang's trunk and retrieves a BUMPER JACK which he then uses to
distract the dog by having it ratchet down from the top of the shaft.
Clever trick, but I hope he never needed to change a flat with that
jack. I dare say he would not have much luck lifting a Mustang that way,
at least without tweaking the bumper quite a bit.

I understand that there is a database that allows anyone to submit their car
for movie productions. My understanding is that if the studio can use your
car, they will pay you to use it. I wouldn't care if I got paid, I would
love to say that my car was in such and such movie. Does anyone know of
such database?
Thanx,

The Discount Tire commercial featured lots of cars and it has been aired for
a few years now, however, in the last shot the car in the center is a
Mustang (65-66?). You'll never guest what color it is....
It is not red, it is blue (aqua?)

Be careful..it is usually an agent, not the studio that does the deal. The
agent may not have enough insurance. The studio can screw up a car and say,
"Sorry, talk to the agent"...

Adding to this line, this was a horror story in the SAAC magazine a few years
back about the '65 R code used in the BF Goodrich ads........The blue paint
was supposed to be a special "peel off" coating, that didn't quite... and the
photo "artists" spray bombed black the Koni shocks, exhaust system etc .....
The car got a full restoration, but not without a long fight, said the
article......
