I am beginning my search for a 66 Fastback GT and I am curious if
anybody has bought a mustang from KAR Auto Group in Columbus Ohio or
Foristall's in Dallas. Any comments good or bad are appreciated. I am
interested in going to a classics dealer to ensure I get what I am
paying for.
I want to buy a rust free restored Mustang and if I was to search one
out on my own I am sure I would spend a considerable amount on airfare
chasing down cars that are not as advertised.
Thanks
Tim Taylor

Going to dealer is no guarantee. They are humans, and even if
reputable can be mislead/mistaken. Plus many of their offerings
are private consignment....

True. It's a tough project, but can be done,

Remember that what you are buying from dealers is either consignments or
cars they have purchased through a broker. In either case you are paying
a profit for everyone. You can use the internet to read newspapers from
the rust free areas of the country and either find someone in the area
to inspect. You will not (normally) find the screeming deals this way
(but you will not at a broker either
Buying from a dealer will not guarantee anything IMHO. They will not
assure you that you are buying even a real factory GT in most cases. I
can give you a number of examples of cars I've looked at for buyers
where the broker/owners knew little more than what they were told or
could see. ALWAYS buyer beware.
If you want to purchase a restored 66 GT you will have to travel far and
wide to find one that was built from a rustfree car and even then you
will find corners cut and little things you will want to change. For
restored cars I would start you looking at the MCA Times, Mustang
Monthly and HEmmings. Ask what shows they have been at and what award
they won. If the show is a national one you can normally find out who
judged the car (or even ask the owner for the judging sheets) and call
them. Through the years I've recieved a number of calls from possible
buyer that wanted to know what I could tell them about a particular car
I had judged.
If your purchasing a real restored car using a judging sheet is a good
way to start evaluating the car.

KAR auto group has some VERY nice cars. For a price. Another
post mentioned "no bargains". This is partially true, I spent as
much with them as I would for any given parts vendor. Some
parts may be more, but they may have something else for less.
As for KAR's kars (; - if money is no object and you are ready
to chunk down some serious change - go for 'em. I was going to
go by there - but me and my friends decided to leave town a
day or so early so we could miss the ice storm. Im sure I would
have walked out of there with SOMETHING, like a pair of '67
Ford Quarterpanels (no tinfoil, as if I had money to get a repro
skin!!) Funny how KAR was brought up just as I was visiting up
there for a friend's band NYE show

.....I am curious if anybody has bought a mustang from KAR Auto Group in
Columbus Ohio ......comments good or bad
Tim,
I purchased a '67 GTA FB from KAR Auto Group about 18 months ago. I pretty much
found the car as advertised. I considered the car priced correctly for it's
condition, and I felt like that treated me honestly. It definitely saved me the
hassle of tracking one down myself. I had casually looked for about a year.
It's amazing what some other sellers considered "excellent" condition. Overall,
I think KAR understands the market pretty well and prices accordingly.
Just keep in mind though that a used car is a used car, and even the best
intentioned dealers can not predict what will happen. I have had a few
surprises (transmission rebuild, rear window leak), but on a 30+ year old car I
expected as much.
Happy hunting!

I wouldn't buy from a dealer because just like a new car dealer, they jack up
the price to make a profit. I recently sold my 70 coupe to a dealer in Dallas
because I got too anxious for the money and they resold it quick on the
internet. Don't know what price they got, but they were asking $2500 more than
they paid me. I also believe they're no more honest than an individual you'd
buy it from.
Maybe we on the list could keep an eye open for a car you're interested in. I
would.

Dealer is no guarantee; cavet emptor applies (let the buyer beware).
Often, I have found that many dealers no very little about Mustangs
unless they specialize just in Mustangs and restore them in house (a la
(Drew Alcazar, Bob Perkins, Jim Wicks, Paul Klute, Randy D'Lessio, etc.)
I'd rather pay a car-locator to find me a car in private hands, or
just do it myself.
One dealer in Florida with ACA credentials tried to pass off a 6-cyl
Mustang convertible as a factory GT. When I informed the older gentle-
man that he had a 6-cylinder Mustang that had a V8 swapped in, he told
me politely that I was mis-informed. It was then that I took my Mustang
Data Plate Guide out of my shirt pocket, and ruined his whole day
(politely). As I left, a younger man chased me to the parking lot and
asked me how I knew these things. I informed him about the MCA, SAAC,
local clubs, MM, M&F, MI, etc. and a whole host of books. As I left
he remarked I hope everyone doesn't read these things! BTW, this
"reputable" southern Florida dealer was trying to sell a 66 plain-jane
6-cylinder convertible, with a bunch of added options, including a C-code
289-2V (which he claimed was a Shelby engine) lots of chrome, etc. for
$25,000. And it had repro front fenders! He honestly didn't know any
better.
Some dealers will play dumb and try to smoke one past you. I'd rather buy
from Hemmings, Ford Trader, SnakeBite, etc. The money I'll save from
commissions and price-inflating profits is well spend on a plane ride or
a car carrier.

I talk to people all over the Mustang world. I once found NOS rear quarters
for the 69 GT350 my friend Bob recently completed. They were $2,100 for the
pair, he didn't want to chance a mis-understand of the parts. So we looked
at the Mustang Times, found the president of the Mustang Club out by him
(happened to be in Tuscon, AZ). He offered to go out and have a look for us.
It all worked out well, and Bob bought the quarters. He sent the fellow a
check for $100 for his trouble. The man returned it - with a note saying he
hoped that someone would help him out if he were looking for a car or parts
in another part of the country.
I think you'll find that some of your fellow list members would help you out
if you asked; I can assure you that I would!

I purchased my 70 Mach at a Mustang store. They also do restorations. I have been
stopping by there for years. I hadn't planned on getting this car right away. I
liked what I saw. I investigated the value of the car, and thought it was a good
price.
Even if the dealer does nothing but Mustangs, it still doesn't hurt to investigate
the value of the car before you buy it.

Thanks to all who responded to my email re: Mustang dealers. I realize
buying a mustang from just any dealer isn't the way to go, I was
thinking of KAR in particular. I have looked at some of their cars and
since they own their own Mustangs and do restorations I thought they
would be a good place to purchase one.
For the people who offered assistance if any cars become available in
your areas, I just may take you up on it!
I think I have turned off the MIME format for messages but if I didn't
can someone email me and tell me how to do it using Netscape Messenger.
Thanks
