I too have wondered if there's a way to "try before I buy" a set of
mufflers.
What exactly gives a setup it's characteristic sound? Is there more to it
than pipe diameter, muffler baffling? Why do big blocks SOUND like a big
block? It shouldn't be exhaust flow--particularly as I'm thinking of the
sound at idle & at cruise. The "Mustang sound" is a phrase I've seen
several times in print (usually referring to late models & with 2 chamber
Flowmasters). I like this sound but I don't want it on MY car. I'm looking
for a very deep tone, not a very loud one. I may get flamed for this but as
far as current production I think the Camaros & Firebirds sound much
"tougher" than any other affordable cars on the road.

The cam and headers have more to do with the sound than the block size or
pipe size in my opinion. When that cam is really hitting hard and the
exhause pulses hard enough to push you hand back, the exhaust will sound
great. I have a 351 2V with CompCams 272, Dynomax headers, Dynomax mufflers
and 2 1/2 inch dual exhaust. Give it a listen.

I've got a pair of Flowmasters on the Ranchero I just purchased though the
receipts I have do not mention which kind. They're about 15" long and a foot
wide, the entrance and exit are on the same edge of the muffler. I've got a
deep rumble out of my stock 351, the women at work say it's "bad" while the men
just drool. I"m not sure if loudness is high, I haven't set off car alarms like
I did with the Monza exhaust on my TR4 (I really pissed off my neighbors with
that). I've herd I can quiet them down a little bit by adding a crossover tube
without sacrifycing the low rumble. Wish I knew which kind they were so I could
pass this on to you, I think they're the sound you want, actually deeper than
what was recorded in a later message, something you won't be able to capture on
a tape.

Hope this helps,
Scott

I have the 2 chamber FM on my 67 and 68 Mustangs. The 68 has a nice cam and
4bbl carb and some tips from Hooker. It sounds a little louder and meaner
than my 67 with the same mufflers. No tips, stock cam and 2bbl carb. The 3
chamber would not be too noticable and the single chamber is cool if your 17
years old and don't mind not being able to hear anything but mufflers smiling smiley
Depends on what your after.

I visited the Flowmaster website and have determined/estimated that I've got the
Series 70, 3 chamber muffler based on length and width. I wish you could hear
it, might be what you'll want. Vist the site:

Hope this helps,

Scott,
Look for the part number of the muffler at the rear of it, then
ask your auto parts guy which ones they are.

On the corral.net site they had a survey on mufflers/exhaust systems.
Almost everyone who had flowmasters would not buy them again (too loud,
annoying resonance). Whereas those who purchased Borlas, Edelbrocks and
Dynomax mufflers would (buy the same ones). Something to think about...
HTH,
Jim
