Pre 89 (pre 88 in California) 5.0s used speed density to guess
air volume. This was a compromise. In 88 California and 89 49 state
5.0s, they used a MASS air meter to measure air volume, with feedback to
the computer. This allowed for much easier modifcation of the intake, since
now the computer knows exactly how much air is coming in..

It basically measures the amount of air entering into the throttle body, and
thus into the intake (barring any restrictions caused by a small throttle
body). One of the more popular ones is the Pro-M 77 mm.
