I keep asking a bunch of questions that would, if implemented, be mutually
exclusive. The truth is, I'm not entirely sure where I want to go with my
current project so I ask about many different possiblities.

In this case, I was wondering about the feasiblity of swapping out the
FMX auto transmission for a standard transmission--either one from the
relevant period ('72) or a more recent vintage (T5, for instance)? I
presume I would need, in addition to the transmission, a new bellhousing, a
clutch assembly, the clutch linkage, and a clutch pedal (would the pedal
support in the car work also for a clutch or would I have to get/make one
special?). Some unanswered questions are would I need a new flywheel? Does
the shifter pierce the floor at the same location or would I need to modify
the floor? How about the console (in addition to shift boot in place of the
indicator plate)? What about connection to the speedometer?

I'd search the net for a write up by Rich Ireland on this conversion.
I bet it is on wabba.net if your favorite search tool is braindead.
This seems like a pretty complete writeup (I haven't done it).

WABBA is a good call, saw the conversion outlined there yesterday. - Ross
