I subscribe to Mustang & Fords. There is also Mustang Monthly and was
considering another subscription. Is one better than the other? Both are
published by Petersen's Publications. I wonder if articles are repeated in
alternate magazines.

Oh, how long I have waited for this question. ;-)
Frankly, spotting differences between them is like
a blind taste test of fake maple syrup - not only
are they pretty much alike, but you may find they do
not hold up well under close scrutiny. If you like
'em, don't look much beyond the lovely color photos. :-)
> Both are published by Petersen's Publications.
But only as of ~60 days ago. I'm told the major impact
of the ownership change - other than "downsizing" at the
former Dobbs' publication - is that Petersen is moving
some of their positions to Florida.
>I wonder if articles are repeated in alternate magazines.
Even with the change of ownership, I'd say never.

Just got my Mustang & Fords (Mustang Monthly should be here any day) & they
were talking about the buy-out. They are now located in the same building
(same hallway even) as Mustang Monthly. Mustang & Fords editor stated they
were going to showcase more non-Mustang Fords (I didn't know Ford made any
other vehicle ;-Þ) & Restomods when they were using 'Stangs in their mag. He
stated they'd leave the "hard core restorations" to Mustang Monthly. I've
subscribed to MM for close to 10 years, just started getting M&F, & YES I've
already seen the same stuff covered in both mags, BUT I've also gleaned some
pretty good info out of each of them. IMHO, I think they're both probably
worth it, neither one costs very much.

OK, for those of use who would like to read a mag that covers a multitude of
areas in restoration, the whoa and go modification (stock and otherwise)
with detail on how or why and yet does not get caught up in the hysterics of
Race this up your tail pipe and smoke it - What magazines do you suggest?
Come on don't be shy now Allen, speak your mind here. I am asking for an
"opinion" and if anyone else has an opinion on good reading let me know as
well.
I would not mind if that reading was aimed toward us forgotten parts of the
corral - 1971 to 1973 Horses of all colors but that might be a little too
much to ask for.

In a nutshell... Mustangs and fords is more "restomod" and includes other
fords '62 to '78. Mustang monthly is more of a restoration approach. HTH

Getting more blurred every month IMHO. Mustang Month, in order to
collect more newstandf sales has moved towards the "use them" path and
away from its roots of restoring early Mustangs. As one of the original
BA subscribers (before articles) I have conceled my subscription only
twice. At present I have let it go pending a change/improvement in
content. I've continued through the years to share my views with the
editors but doubt the Petersen purchase is an improvment.

Since the number of possible articles is limited you have and will
continue to see (especially since they are both IMHO heading the same
direction) the same/similar topics though not exacty the same text and
pictures.
Advertizers are already complaining of the changes in cost and
circulation of new ad fees.

I've gotten a couple of issues of MI and wasn't very impressed. No offense
but it seemed like a "chick" mag, maybe that was because the first issue I
picked up was of women & their 'Stangs. There were some very nice cars, but
not much substance (in the way of articles) in that issue & the next month was
repeats I had already seen in M&F & MM.

Oh, well...if *that's* all you want. ;-)
I'm not sure there is such a thing, generally speaking,
nor am I sure there could be a consensus on how one mag
could accomplish all those goals. And even if it could
be done, is there enough market to sustain it by drawing
ad dollars? If you saw the kind of mail they get, you
wouldn't be asking this question - most of it asks why
they don't have more coverage/photos of Ford X (fill in
your personal favorite, here). The letters about any
serious restoration article can be counted on two hands.
And since we're talking about Petersen - widely known in
publishing circles by the somewhat disparaging title of
"King of the Niche Marketers" - et al., my money says if
it could be done those guys would have done it already.
If nothing else, they're slick and competitive. If they
can spot a couple hundred thousand people who would buy
a given type of magazine, 6 months later - poof! Instant
entertainment.

Oh, yeah, that's me: the "silent Cal" of Ford-dom. ;-)

As in most other areas of interest, I think its pretty
well-established serious enthusiasts' needs won't (can't)
be served by a large-volume magazine. A big gross isn't
compatible with small, "special interest" groups. Want
big gross? Easy - water down the content and add stuff
for those who prefer less strenuous reading. Adding some
sexual titillation doesn't hurt either, especially with
newsstand sales.
