Dave,
If the front bushings in your leaf springs are shot on one side or the other,
the car will steer either under acceleration or braking.
Sometimes it's hard to tell by looking at the spring while it's bolted on.
You might have to take the spring loose to check it out.

Also check to see if the rear shackles (sp?) are free to move in their
arc. I onch had a jeep that did the same thing and it was a shackle that
was binding up.

Thanks for the info. I will check this out in the next few weeks.
At the moment I have the timing cover off along with the water pump
because the gasket was leaking oil and it just got a lot worse and
I have been putting it off. Where the pump bolts on the timing
cover after replacing the gaskets (gasket set) the bolts would not
torque up, (more than one water pump in 31 years) and I wondered
why there was so much jointing compound. You guessed it. Threads
are striped, so I took it into work and fitted (not me) Helicoils
so now it will torque up.
So what's new?

I have replaced the rear shackles so it looks like front bushings.
Right now I'm replacing the timing cover gasket...What a job. Boy
did I have a job removing the harmonic balancer. It's all done
now, just have to put it back together.
