I'm with Farmers...and this is how they did it for my car...

I already have two cars through them. This is important because we have 2
drivers in the family and two OTHER cars, so that allows me to have my 72
Convertible insured under their "classic" insurance. Under this policy, it
is insured 100% - collision, comp, fire, theft, etc...just like any other
car, but is limited to 2500 miles a year, and it needs an appraisal (I had
mine appraised at $10K). The policy states "mainly for use on parades and
shows, and other occasional trips". It says nothing about not being insured
if I am on my way to work.

The best part is that it is very inexpensive...$350 / year !!

Now, I will say I have a great driving record, and I have other insurance
through them, so I probably have a decent discount...so "your mileage may
vary"...but at least you know it is possible to have reasonable insurance.

Kevin,

I've got a 66' Fastback that I have appraised at $10K also. I have
my classic insurance coverage through American Collectors ( I believe
they are based in New Jersey). I have the exact same coverage you
stated and my premium is only $110/year. You can not use your car as
a daily driver to work though. My policy doesn't explicitly say this and
I've been warned by others that if something were to occur during this
circumstance, you will not be covered. The fact that they state only parades
and shows indicates that it is not intended to be driven to work (IMHO).
They have a web site:
americancollectors.com

Check it out and I hope they could help to reduce the premium you are paying!

I've been checking on insurance for my '66 restomod. It
would be valued higher than the 10K I've seen mentioned
here. I can probably live with a moderate mileage
restriction, but must be able to drive it to work once in a
while (great place to show off:-). My problem has been that
every policy I've checked on requires it be garage kept. I
do keep it in a friends garage most times, but I do not have
a garage of my own and when I do keep it at my house it is
under a cover, but not in a garage. Has anyone been in a
similar situation and found insurance that will cover the
agreed upon value?

Thanks,
Eric

Scott,

Interesting. How long have you used American Collectors?
Have you had any dealings w/ them other then sending in a
check when the bill is due?

About every 'collector' insurance I've seen has this
'no drive to work' clause in it but, A-C has the following;
Flexible Usage - Our policy does not have an "attendance" requirement. Insured
vehicles may be driven and enjoyed up to 2500 annual miles, so long as they are
not used for general transportation.

I interpret 'general transportation' as daily driver.

This would be absolutely perfect for my, (looks around to see
who's listening,,,,) trailer queen and my Mustang.

Side bar re: trailer queens-- I had that drive em if you got em, attitude also,
until I got an 'out of the show room looking', low mileage original car.
I've now changed my tune a little. It's easy to say, If I had xxxxx,
I'd take it out and drive it and (whatever),.... until you have one.
They're a catch 22. If you have an original, low mileage car, you want
to drive it. If you drive it, it won't stay an original, low mileage car!

Eric, I only have a two car garage. In the winter I store my
Mustang in a rented garage, my current insurance company
has no problem w/ that.

Randy

Randy,

I've been with A-C for two years now. I have not had any
correspondence with them other than sending in the check
and talking to a representative over the phone (who were very
accommodating and pleasant to deal with).

I agree that general transportation does not equal daily driver.
I'm lucky if I get 500 miles on mine in the course of a year. Their
rates are very attractive, but I may look at switching over to
Haggerty in the future if they allow less stringent requirements on
"when" you can drive the vehicle.

Same here. I had A-C for 10 years and never needed them.
I switched to State Farm because the rates were practically
identical and I felt better under one roof, plus I
wanted an umbrella liability policy and this made it easier.

Scott, Kevin, and all,

I have American Collectors since 1990. My 67 GT conv ($10k),
67 GT350 ($40k), and 70 Mach I ($20k) were a total of $390/year. It is a
stated value policy, but it includes an inflation index that automatically
rises
1-8% per year, without doing anything.

The deal is 3k miles per year with occassional special purpose use, defined
in their policy as parades, car shows, and drives to and from car club
events.
That means that an accident driving down to SAAC is treated the same way
an accident to your local car club meeting. Or between storage facilities.
Or on the way back from your mechanic. You get the picture.

You must garage the car. You must belong to a car club. And you must have
another means of transportation to get to/from your job.

They receive their payments in New Jersey. But they actually underwrite
their
policies in Florida. And they will deal directly with the public without a
broker.

Just FYI: they offered to add my 1986 SVO; $65 more per year.
