Thanks to all for the comments on upgrading to
electronic ignition. I installed a Petronix module
under the distributor cap and a new Petronix coil and
noticed a huge change. Not that my little 6 cyl is
going to beat anybody off the line, but every upgrade
helps. It really did take 15 minutes to install! I
would highly recommend.
Can anyone out there give me a technical description
of what improvements to expect in terms of engine
performance? Should I expect improved horsepower?
Better MPG? Less Knock? Better acceleration?
Thanks Again.

I can't say enough about it! I don't have hard performance improvement
numbers, but the difference in acceleration and engine smoothness are more
than noticable. I do keep very careful gas milage (or is that fuel
consumption?) figures, though, and got a 25% improvement right away. The
coil and ignitor paid for themselves in like 12 weeks.
I did find that the engine timing was messed up when first installed. I
don't know if it was because magnets in the little coller were slightly off
from the cam that lifted the points, or just too much slop in the timing
chain (getting replaced soon), but it is worth checking.
Have fun!
