Michael:

I replaced the sender at the same time as the gauge. I tested the
sender; it's resistance is variable as the float swings through its
range of movement.

The float is OK; I've already yanked it out to check for a leak.
That leaves a wiring or regulator problem. Remember, this error is
continuous, always reading half-tank when I fill the car and moving
towards empty. When the needle indicates one-quarter tank, I fill it
up and it takes just under 8 gallons. That means it is accurately
indicating the tank's level but only utilizing the lower half of the
gauge.

If the car had no personality, I'd lose interest! I'll get around
to sorting that problem out soon, whereupon the car will probably
find a new problem to challenge me with.

If anyone else would care to offer their diagnosis, I'd be most
appreciative.

TIA,

Gary Zimmerman
